This Friday, Feb. 26, everyone’s favorite indie-alternative band, The 1975, is releasing their second studio album.
And. I. Am. Freaking. Out.
This new record is entitled, “I Like It When You Sleep For You Are So Beautiful Yet So Unaware Of It.” The long-winded name is true to The 1975’s brand, which includes constantly finding ways to surprise their audience or do something out of the norm. From pulling a huge PR stunt to make fans believe they broke up in order to promote a new album all the way to their simple on-stage mannerisms, The 1975 has cultivated their own unique image.
But, back to the new album. If the four newly released songs are any indication, this album is going to transform the music scene. And if not the music scene, at the very least the band is transforming what their own music means to them. While still keeping to its self-titled debut roots in some songs, like “The Sound,” the band has also broken away from the sound of the first album in other songs, like “UGH!” and “Love Me.”
Just last week, The 1975 released the track “Somebody Else,” which, in my opinion, is the best of any of the newly released songs. Ultimate babe/lead singer Matt Healy’s dream-like voice takes anyone listening on a journey, creating a story in the listener’s mind. At least that’s what happened for me when first listening to it.
What I love about The 1975 is the way their music makes me feel, and these new songs are no exception. Embodying the essence of “dream-pop,” (I coined the term myself, no shame) the band always makes me feel at ease or takes my mind away from reality. It sounds corny, but it is the truth. And for this reason specifically, I am beyond ready for the next album to come out this week.
Overall, these new songs have proved that The 1975 is not just a one-trick kind of band; the new songs still have the distinctive sound that the band manages to foster, but also brings something new to the table simultaneously. The excitement I have for this album cannot be contained for much longer, and I am just waiting to be able to have a dance party in my room to every single one of the songs on this next album.
Without a doubt in my mind, this album will live up to its hype — and I cannot wait to see what happens for The 1975 because of it.
