6 Things The University Of Florida Needs To Improve On

I love UF, but there are definitely things that can be improved.

I have had the pleasure of spending the last 3 years of my life at the University of Florida, a Top Ten Public College. I love UF, and I know I made a great decision when I chose to go here. However, there are definitely things that UF could fix to make the University even better.

1. Fix the parking system.

The parking system at UF is horrendous, and it can and should be fixed. At FSU, they do not pay for decals, in fact they do not even have decals. Instead, they register their plates, for free, and then are able to park in any general student parking spot since they do not have weird levels like UF.

On top of this, there should not be nearly as much ticketing as there is, and the appeals should not be denied as often as they are. We are supposed to be the better University, but honestly it is ridiculous that the parking system is this bad.

2. Hire better professors, or push the ones you have to do a better job.

It is 2018, we all know that lecturing for 2 hours straight does not work, so why do you hire professors who continue to do it. Hire professors that encourage discussion, not ones that read straight off the slides. Hire more Dr. Daves! He made plants more interesting than I ever thought they could be.

3. Revamp the grading system.

It should not be normal for Physics and Calculus students to fail exams and have to rely on the curves. How about we go back to point three and hire professors who can teach, so passing grades are not just assigned to the students who failed less.

4. Make it less confusing to find classes.

Why is there a McCarty Hall A-D, and more importantly why are there very fews signs that help tell you which is which. It took me forever to find a class in McCarty C because there were very few signs to help me figure out which was which. I'm pretty sure I had to rely on a print out that someone had taped to the door of McCarty B. Why in the world is MAE A so far away from MAE B and C. I was almost late to my class because Google maps took me to the wrong spot.

5. Make it easier to apply for a minor.

I should not have to drop my form off at CLAS then go pick it up a few days later and walk it to an office in the Education Building. It is 2018 we should be able to apply online.

6. Add more outlets to the classrooms.

A lot of students use laptops or other devices in class to take notes and do work, so make sure that they have every opportunity to do so by adding more outlets into some of the older classrooms and lecture halls.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
