We Are Imprisoned By Labels

Life is hard enough. We don't need labels to make it even harder.

Gay. Lesbian. Fag. Dyke. Beaner. Cracker. Fat. Skinny. Emo. Preppy. Jock. Geek. Masculine. Feminine. Labels. Each of us have a strand a labels attached to us as if we are nothing but a barcode in the grocery store. Society has made it seem like you are nothing but your label. Your label consumes you and you are to fill every stereotype surrounding your label.

We need to end labeling. There is too much pressure emphasized on trying to fit into certain labels. We are humans and everything we do is fluid. There is no right or wrong way to look or to love or to be. We are free to do whatever we want to do and we all should be allowed to do so without fearing the judgement of others.

We shouldn't have to choose or decide what label fits us best. People are so susceptible to change and our feelings and mindsets are not permanent. So why should we have to choose a few words to label us when everything can change so quickly?

Just because a girl likes a girl doesn't mean she's a lesbian. Just because a boy likes a boy doesn't mean he's gay. Just because a girl looks like a girl doesn't mean she is one. But why does that matter to you? It shouldn't. Sexuality and gender are fluid. I like what I like when I like it. Some days I don't feel like either gender and some days I feel like both, so I'm just me. I am me and I like what I like when I like it. That's that. There are tons of other people who feel similar but feel like they aren't allowed to feel that way. Everyone deserves the freedom to express themselves however they may choose. It does not concern you.

Even within the label of the LGBT+ community, where it's supposedly okay to be label free and to be yourself, there are sub-labels. Not only are you gay but you can also be a twink, bear, butch, masc, bottom, top. Not only are you a lesbian but you can also be a fem, butch, stud, gold star, touch me not, and more. It's ridiculous that we feel the need to give every single one of our feelings and preferences a label. It gets complicated when every little thing we do has to mean something more than what it has to.

Everyone is entitled to do whatever they want and to feel whatever they want. Life is hard enough trying to survive every day life without the extra pressures of trying to decide exactly who you are and who you want to be and where you want to fit in. Let people just live and be free. Stereotype free. Judgment free. Label free. Just live and let live.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
