Why It's So Important To Make Time For Yourself

In life, it's so easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle of your daily struggles and dramas. When it gets too stressful and you feel like you're on the verge of exploding, take some time to yourself. Sometimes the best thing you can do for not only yourself, but for the people around you is to just take a step back and reevaluate. It's okay to take a break.

And at times, it's exactly what you may need. For those moments when you feel like life is just too much and that you'll never catch a break, take the night to treat yourself and spend some time regrouping. If you're like me, you may find yourself lonely and uncomfortable when you don't have the presence of others to keep yourself company. One of my favorite quotes is: "loneliness is a sign that you're in desperate need of yourself." It's so important to take that cue from your mind and body and respond to it.

Once you've recognized the need for a night off, you may be wondering "what do I do now?" My go-to first step is to turn on some soul-speaking music, diffuse my favorite essential oil, and turn off the lights with only my string lights twinkling to create a relaxing and calming atmosphere. Here are some of my favorite things to do when I'm in dire need of "me time:"

1. Do a face mask

Somehow having fresh, healthy skin makes me feel like I have my life more together. And whether that's a proven fact or not, it sure does make you feel better and your skin will thank you as well. Win-win.

2. Read a book—poetry is my favorite

Reading itself is so relaxing. But it's also funny how it just so happens that what you're reading can relate exactly to what you're going through and shed some insight on your situation that might help you to gain a new perspective.

3. Paint, color, draw, or sketch

Not only is art very therapeutic and good way to refocus your energy, but once you've completed your masterpiece, you'll have something to post on Insta and show off your hard work. Being proud of something you made and worked hard on is one of the best feelings.

4. Journal about it

Keeping a journal is one of the best ways to relieve stress and work through your issues. Plus, one day, your grandkids can read it and see how interesting your life was back in the day.

5. Have a Netflix and takeout food night with yourself

Have a movie you've been dying to see or a show you need to catch up on? Order your favorite takeout food and rent a nice feel-good movie and relax.

6. Take a bath

Here's the chance to break out your favorite bath bomb or bath salts. Light a couple of candles and sit and soak.

7. Yoga/mediation

If you don't have a regular yoga or meditation ritual, you can look up a video on YouTube. Roll out a mat or towel in your room and follow along. This is the best way to gather your thoughts and explore your mind.

Don't underestimate the power of "me time." Sometimes simply disconnecting from the world and taking some time to yourself is the best thing you can do. So whatever works for you, turn on some music and get to it. After all, tomorrow is a new day. And there's no problem that sunshine and a warm cup of coffee can't fix.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
