Words are a powerful tool that we have at our disposal. Words can manifest power in the way that we use them in order to get what we want accomplished. This is a skill that every leader needs in order to guide others and themselves toward success.
My boyfriend took a class this semester about putting power behind the words that you choose. The most important thing that he learned from this course was how to use your words to your advantage. Word choice is a key factor in many aspects of communication.
One thing that he understood from his lectures was that you can change the way that you talk so that you may gain things that are in your interest. For example, when you're doing a favor for an individual instead of diminishing your act of kindness when they thank you acknowledge what you have done and say, “You’re welcome, I know that you would do the same for me.” Therefore a subtle transaction has been made. Now this person feels in debt to you and you are more likely to receive a favor in return in the future.
Another example of the way that words can provide power is once again dealing with favors. If you ask for a larger favor than you actually intend to ask for and you are denied then you are more likely to get an agreement for the smaller favor that you plan to ask for. If you happen to get the larger favor then you still end up with a good deal. These are just a few ways that he learned and taught me about how you can simply change your speech patterns to become a more effective leader.
This skill is very important because the people that are proficient with their words are often those that are the most successful in their careers or as skilled leaders. Having this intricate skill can help you push yourself to the top. Oral communication is one of the top skills that employers are looking for and, if you can manipulate it to your advantage, it can help you not only land that job, but also work your way up.
Speaking can be key factor to how your personnel perform as well as how you perform yourself. Leaders work with different people every day and need to deal accordingly with each one. They must understand how to make all the different groups that they interact with at ease when stressful situations arise. Using a select choice of words will be key to keep their peers happy and keep their project or operation running smoothly.
Leadership is a great skill to acquire throughout any career path and mastering the power of your words will ensure success.
