Take it from me, finding a decent summer job is extremely important. While you're still in school look for jobs specifically hiring for summer, or seasonal jobs. it will be easier to get an interview and you probably won't have to quit at the end of the summer because you’ll be a “seasonal” worker. Also, you'll have first pick from all the available jobs because you're looking before everyone else.
I ended up putting in six applications and then procrastinating on following up. Then, after finally calling a few times and never getting a call back, I resorted to going up to a local factory that is almost always hiring. I was told that they hired everyone on the spot and interviewed them right then and there.
So the next day I got dressed and headed to the factory, got the interview and ended up scoring a full-time job… packing ribbons. I went to work thinking that it would a simple, easy job from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., but I was wrong. Yes, the job was easy, but it was the most frustrating thing I've ever had to do. Not only did I have to get up at 5:30 to actually get to the building, I had to do the same thing for 8 hours. If you have, you know how hard that is! Every two minutes the machines would break or stall. Eventually I got the hang of it, but that didn't make me like doing it any better. I started to listen to music while I worked to take my mind off the time (that seemed to never pass). But soon I didn't want to listen to the music anymore because my favorite songs suddenly became anthems of the miserable job I was working at. I would come home and complain about work even though I knew I needed to make some money. I annoyed my parents into many arguments on “Why you needed to find a job earlier”. Sorry about that…
I really wish I had listened to them because then i could be doing something I liked, such as handling the reptiles at PetSmart instead of handling the stress that came from packing ribbons.
Moral of the story: Listen to your parents when its April and they say “Hey, its time to start looking for a summer job!”
