The Importance of Being Carefree

Why being analytical, questioning, reflective, and lost in thought can be counterproductive.

The Importance of Being Carefree
The Great Gatsby 2013 Film

For some people, but not all, it is a daily struggle to put away nagging, overthought, or anxious thoughts and just live and let be. I know I fall into that category very easily as I constantly go through my day wondering what secret motives people have for doing what they do. While it may be good to question some things, sometimes you’re better off accepting it without questioning it, and here is why. I have learned that while this personality type can be amusing and fairly intelligent, it in some occasions can act as a repellent for people who tend not to think along those lines. It seems to me that as I questioned more frequently my place in this school, in this city, in this country, and in this world the more I put myself in a place further from society. By questioning reality, the world, society, and cultural norms, I found myself unintentionally alienating myself from the very concepts I was trying to understand. To put it simply, one must either be 100% within or without. While engaging with anything or anyone you must be fully present during that time or else you’ll miss out on the connection being made because you were too up in your head trying to understand bigger, more symbolic meanings. Now for those of you who are reading this and are finding yourself completely lost with what I am trying to convey, let me break it down even further. A perfect analogy for my theory lies right within the popular film The Great Gatsby (the Leonardo DiCaprio version). I’m sure by now most of you are familiar with the film but for those of you who are not, I will give you a brief overview to better understand my analogy. The film is set in New York in 1922 during a time of rising wealth in which the narrator, Nick Caraway describes his experiences with a mysterious man by the name of Gatsby. One scene in particular is Nick Caraway, partying with a wealthy relative and his mistress which is significant because it is in that scene where he becomes detached from his surroundings as he begins to reflect on the events taking place around him. He described himself and being “within and without” meaning someone who typically doesn't belong being put in a situation that is counter to all that he has experienced and counter to his supposed place within that society. This scene is a perfect example of being too involved in analyzing your surroundings to the point that you feel detached from the events taking place. And this is what I wanted to stress the most: that while it is good to question things and be reflective, there are times for these things that aren’t while you’re with other people or else you will miss out on the full experience.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
