With politics today, this world is going absolutely nowhere. But, there are students that want to change that. Particularly Political Science and Philosophy Majors who hate politics.
After I transferred to SUNY Cortland from Iona College, I changed my major from English to Political Science with the hopes of becoming an attorney. I dreamt about sitting in a courtroom and listening to testimonies from victims, victim's families, and the defense. The argumentation and energy of the courtroom was like a high, and I was infatuated.
Just last winter, I endured and completed an internship at West Point: United States Military Academy in the Staff Judge Advocate Office. This is where I thought I could have my foot in the door until I realized that all attorneys are basically pencil pushers. They sit behind a desk all day and rarely ever go to court. Everything is a constant argument because their brain is wired to think that way. Nothing can ever be a simple, friendly conversation.
I realized I couldn't live my life this way. This was not for me. And it was around this time that so called "rape culture" was on its rise where I thought to myself that I really didn't have the heart to sit there and not only listen to a rape victim's testimony, but force it out of them and have them repeat it over and over. This is not justice, and it certainly doesn't put the suspect in custody any longer. We all have realized this.
I hate politics. Business men and women will ask me, "so, you're going to be a politician then!" Uhm, no, quite the opposite. Our politics are corrupt and crooked, and my brain cannot be wired to think the way today's politicians do. I took it upon myself to become a philosophy major on top of my political science major, which many college students practically ignore, to try and make sense of this world. In philosophy, we not only pull apart and dissect a situation or problem, but we try to figure out rational, ethical, moral and logical explanations as to why. That is what is so intriguing to me and the very few that happen to love this major as well.
I am both of these majors to not only have a sense of what is going on in this world, but also to have a sense of how to fix it. No, I am not a nursing major, nor would ever want to go to medical school. No, I don't care for teaching or physical education either. But, there are plenty of other people out there that do enjoy that, and more power to them. I'd rather try to figure out what's wrong with this world and fix it the right way. It is important that this world is fixed politically, economically, spiritually, and so on.
There are many students out there that wish the same, but ask yourself, are you in the right field to be doing this?
