Nursing is everything I have ever wanted, and I realized this on my mission trip. We see a lot, most things we wish we had never seen. We feel things we wouldn't want to wish on anybody else. But we love everything about what we are going to be and who we are. I'm a Nursing Major, and I'm proud of it.
1. I'm a nursing major, but I'm not taking the "easy way out".
Most people think that nurses are "failed MDs". I mean, we chose a specific career path different from a doctor.
2. I'm a nursing major, but I'm not becoming a "naughty" nurse.
Those costumes are actually pretty discouraging. I don't think anyone has ever gone into a hospital where their charge nurse was wearing knee high socks, a short white dress, high heels or go-go boots and a plastic syringe. Did you know in Britain, nursing is the most sexualized profession?
3. I'm a nursing major, but I'm not an angel.
Yes, I will deal with a lot that no one will ever have to deal with, but that does not identify me as an "angel" or "saint". We make mistakes, too.
4. I'm a nursing major, but I'm not a "low skilled handyman" who specializes in "Yes, doctor!"
We work with doctors, not for doctors. This is a big misconception.
5. I'm a nursing major, but I'm not always going to get straight set hours.
Nurses are almost always understaffed, normal nine to five? Eh, nice try.
6. I'm a nursing major, but I'm not someone who needs to hear "good luck" every time I say my major.
We hear you, we know it's going to be hard, we know we need a "back-up" plan, but we chose to become a nurse for a reason.
7. I'm a nursing major, but I'm not always going to be a female.
Male nurses exist. No, they're not always gay. They're equally qualified and wonderful nurses.
8. I'm a nursing major, but I'm not going to "be okay" with a C.
A 'C' is not average. I'm not even okay with getting a 'B'. We're expected to go above and beyond expectations. We get distraught when our GPA turns out be a 3.6.
9. I'm a nursing major, but I'm not going to wipe butts and change bedpans the rest of my life.
Phlebotomy, emptying pressure ulcers, catch the vomit, ACLS, ambulatory care. Eh, I could go on, but you'd get bored after a while and probably not understand a lot that I'm saying.
10. I'm a nursing major, but I'm not socially inept.
Yeah I might not have that much of a social life and kind of live in the library, but that doesn't mean that I gave it up or can't get one.
11. I'm a nursing major, but I'm not weak.
Not just lugging all of my books around, but let me tell you about all of the patients we have to lift on a daily basis in clinical, at the hospital and so much more. Plus we've got a heart of steel, I might be crying about a test I have, but I'm positive this is what I'm doing for the rest of my life.
12. I'm a nursing major, and I love what I'm becoming.
