I'm Going To Teach For A Living, Stop Telling Me The "Downsides" To My Future Career

Surprise! Teachers don't make that much money. You won't see a teacher rolling in millions of dollars, but you will see the millions of souls they've touched through their lifetime. People don't teach because they enjoy the salary. People teach because they enjoy the impact they can have on another child's life.

Sure, I'll have to put in more than 40 hours a week, but it'll all be worth it. There will be early mornings and late nights, but I'm going to do whatever it takes to make sure my students are well educated and prepared for their lives ahead. Yes, I want to teach them their basic skills in the areas of English and math, but I want to teach them so much more. I want to teach them how to be decent human beings. Not every child has a perfect home life. Every child has a different story and different struggles, and I want to be able to help each one through the tough times of life.

I know from my experience, that I would not be where I am now without the guidance from my past teachers. When I was struggling with something whether it be in class or a personal issue, I always had an adult at school that I could go to. I know that I would be able to get the help I needed, and I want to do the same for my future students.

Maybe you think teaching is a dumb profession, but please tell me where you would be without your teachers. Maybe you hated school, but if you look back, you are probably thankful for the people who taught you a little something when you were younger. Maybe I'm wrong, and you have nothing good to say about education or your teachers, and I'm sorry for that. I'm sorry that you didn't have a teacher to be there for you like I did in school. But I promise that if your child were to be my student, I would be there teacher for him or her that you never had.

I can't wait to start my career as a teacher. Yes, I know that there will be times of struggles and days that I stress out. I won't be raking in millions of dollars, but I'm not in this for the money. I'm in it for the long haul, the late nights, the struggles, and the children. So with all that being said, please stop telling me all the down sides to my career. I am fully aware of what I'm getting myself into, and I'm more than excited for that journey to begin.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
