Everyone is dying a little bit every single day. Doesn’t it blow your mind that 151,600 people die each day according to ecology.com? Yet we live every day like we are immortal and are going to be around for all eternity. A reality check for those who fall for this - we’re not.
I have always been fascinated by the idea of death itself. We are living, breathing, creatures yet, what is our purpose here on earth? We are surrounded by this ideology that the next phase of our lives or what comes next will always be bigger and better. I hate to say so but sadly it’s true, the next step isn’t always as great as it once seemed.
Dying for it to be the weekend
It starts out very small. We are simply longing for the weekend. By the time we bitch and moan about Monday - Thursday and get antsy for Friday, we get our desired goal- the weekend. This pattern repeats itself roughly 52 times. Why I must ask, can we not enjoy every damn day that we get to walk this earth? We are SO lucky
Dying to graduate HS
This concept hits us around the time of high school. By this time in our lives many have experienced death and lost someone right before their eyes. This, however, doesn’t exempt us from the “It will never happen to me” thoughts that creep into our minds. Everyone falls victim to it at some time or another. We are dying to get good grades, dying to get our driver’s license, dying to get a date to senior prom, dying to get into the college of our dreams- in that moment it hits us. All this time we were going through the motions and just like that, high school is over.
Dying to finish college
Some people could stay in college forever and be perfectly content. What’s not to love about booze, sex, and sleeping in? For the majority, however, this sense of repetitiveness gets old pretty fast. This drains us and we long for the days where having a stable job and being able to live off of more than ramen sounds pretty satisfying.
Dying to get a job
Fresh out of college, it isn’t always the easiest task to break into the industry being pursued. Dying to schmooze, to get that raise, or even just to finally have the opportunity to provide for yourself, is going to eat away at a huge chunk of your life. That’s not to say, sit on your ass and do nothing but think about breathing and being alive, but find a balance and pursue your passions even if it’s not financially appeasing.
Dying to get married
We all long to find the person created for us - our soulmates if you will. Some think love is a fraud, but to my knowledge, it surrounds us every day. To my friends who are single. STOP looking. When you actively seek people to walk in and change your life you are going to be a very sad and lonely person one day. No one wants to die alone am I right? Find good, solid people to surround you and your perfect match will walk into your life when you least expect it.
Dying to retire
Let’s be honest, unless you’re super passionate about your job (which you should be) who really wants to work? Wouldn’t you much rather play? This is where the pattern starts to slow down for us and to get pretty scary. We start to realize “oh shit”, I miss my college days or when I was newly married and didn’t have kids to pay for. Minds start churning out thoughts like “my life is 2/3 of the way over” or "what am I going to do with all of this time on my hands?”
Dying to be remembered
Life goes on and doesn’t wait up for you. The legacy you leave behind is crucial to your entire existence. Did you make an impact on this world with the time you were given? Or did you go home every night, crawl into your pajamas, flip on the tv and waste your life away, thinking what if?
PLEASE TAKE THIS ADVICE NOW AND NOT LATER
We are going to get to a point (if we haven’t already) where we look back and wonder where our lives went. No matter what stage of life you are currently in, realize that with every breath you take you are slowly dying.
Are you going to truly live or just die like everyone else?
