We all have had our fair share of encounters with public transportation. Some of them good and some of them bad, but mostly the latter. For college kids, those city bus or metro expeditions increase dramatically in the summer due to people getting summer internships or commuting to summer school. I myself, am commuting to the University of Washington for summer classes five days out of the week.
I have learned many things from How I Met Your Mother, but the thing that is applicable here is that buses are filled with crazy people. Sometimes you might even be one of those people. In the words of Ted Mosby, "If you can't spot the crazy person on the bus, it's you." So, in honor of my favorite sitcom character, here are some thing's that I've done just this past week to be the crazy person on the bus.
Monday June 22:
I listen to music most of the time when I'm on the bus. This helps me avoid any social interaction with strangers. I sometimes get pretty into my music and I'll start tapping my foot to the beat or bob my head up and down. But this Monday, the song "When I Come Around" by Green Day came on and I was just grooving along with it. So much so in fact that I didn't realize I had started drumming on my legs which got me a couple weird looks. What got me even more looks was when I air drummed the drum solo, with gusto I might add, at the end of the bridge and then capped it off with a vibrant snap of the fingers. I thought I was pretty cool, the rest of the passengers might have thought otherwise.
Thursday June 25:
As I previously mentioned, I am taking summer classes at UW, one of said classes is only on Tuesdays and Thursdays. It meets in a different building on each day. So on Thursdays I get off the bus one stop earlier than I do on Tuesdays. You know how sometimes you get caught up in the moment, and you're just kind of taking in the scenery and you forget what day it is entirely? Well, we got to my Thursday stop and I had forgotten what day it was. So, I turned to the person next to me and I said, well my music was playing pretty loud so I basically yelled, "What day is it?!" prompting everybody to think I was indeed both crazy and clueless.
Friday June 26:
The previous day on my way home from school, I had taken my headphones out of my pocket and the little rubber thing at the end, we'll just call it the aglet of the headphone, got ripped off my headphones. Once it fell to the floor, I lost sight of it. On Friday, I got on the exact same bus in the morning, I sat in my usual seat and I looked down to see the aglet of my headphone sitting on the bus floor. Then everybody sitting near me watched me bend down, pick up what was a seemingly random headphone aglet from the floor of the bus, and stick it in my ear.
That was all of the stuff that happened only this week. I'm sure there will be plenty more moments of embarrassment to come, but I'm kind of looking forward to them. Anybody can just sit on a bus and go about their day normally, but it takes someone special to be able to be the crazy person on the bus 60 percent of the time and be okay with it. So, this goes out to everyone who has been or ever will be the crazy person on the bus. We are the ones who make the world interesting. Cheers to you all.
