I'm Black and I Do NOT Support #BlackLivesMatter

Yeah, you heard right.

I'm Black and I Do NOT Support #BlackLivesMatter
Nilanthi Kanapathipillai

I'm black and I do not support the #BlackLivesMatter movement. I also do not support the #AllLivesMatter.

Some may view me as crazy, ignorant, or down right not human for saying this but its true. Before getting crazy angry about this, hear me out.

It is very clear that police brutality especially against the colored folks out there is a problem. It is also evident that there is a huge epidemic of colored people being discriminated against based on the color of their skin. I personally have experienced this.

However, dividing the people based off of hashtag is something I refuse to support. Before I get into the #BlackLivesMatter movement let me address all that is wrong with the #AllLivesMatter movement.

I do not hate many things. In fact I can count on two hands the amount of things I hate, so believe me when I say I HATE the #AllLivesMatter movement. I hate everything that it stands for. Just by looking at the hashtag you can tell some white male who has white privilege and male privilege came up with it.

#AllLivesMatter was created by someone who was butthurt over the fact that we were drawing attention to a specific group and decided that by creating this hashtag it would level the playing field. Sorry to break it to you, but all you did was further divide the country all due to a stupid hashtag. It discredits the issues at hand by a landslide.

Now that that is out of the way, I do not hate #BlackLivesMatter movement, but I do not agree with it. I do however support the ideology behind it. This particular movement is not only addressing the issues of race within the issues of police brutality but it also addressing other injustices that blacks face.

That being said this movement was not properly thought out. In this day in age, with how news is not exclusive to just the five o'clock news on TV, it is so incredibly easy for the media to warp, twist, and corrupt news. They have done just that, especially with this movement.

The media has taken this movement and ran with it. Not only has the media turned this poorly worded hashtag into a race war, which quite frankly we were already in a race battle: this just added more fuel to the fire, the media has also turned it into a us versus them battle with our government.

There are clear examples of this all over the United States. Yes, there is a problem with police brutality. Yes, black lives tend to be the victims in police brutality more often than not. Yes, we as Americans were becoming numb to it and it did need attention drawn to it, but #BlackLivesMatter was not the way to do it.

Thankfully, there are police departments out there that are starting to actively and publicly show support to the ideology behind #BlackLivesMatter, but I honestly do not think it will help much. The media has turned this hashtag into an us versus them to the point where I do not think we can go back, no matter how hard we try.

The uproar of this hashtag is literally tearing apart our country one like and share at a time. All thanks to poor wording. Instead of us rising together as a country to end police brutality, not just for blacks but for all; even though the blacks are facing it more than others, this hashtag is turning us against each other.

It is making good cops weary to properly do thier jobs due to the extremist in this group or even those who just have a grudge against bad cops.

It is making those who typically aren't "racist" fight against this movement because they feel they are being excluded from a huge issue in our country.

It is giving the media strings to play the rest of our country like puppets in their show while our country burns down around is.

I refuse to be a puppet in this show. I refuse to be afraid to wear my fathers police shield in fear of being shot by affiliation. I refuse to be afraid of cops because of the color of my skin. I refuse to stand back and watch the media pin us against each other.

Instead I support #EachLifeMatters. No matter what, if each of us are accountable for our actions we can change the pace of our country. If each of us stand up for those who can't stand up for themselves we can change the pace of this country. If each of us take a stand we will win this battle. We will make this country the greatest place in the world.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

Top 10 Reasons My School Rocks!

Why I Chose a Small School Over a Big University.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
