Igniting My Inner Hatter

As many of us have learned after waking up on Sunday at 2 p.m., Homecoming Week is a lesson in time management. From dancing for the Airwaves title to the glorious football win, Homecoming 2015 was a memorable one. Compared to other schools, our special week is on a lower scale, but you can’t deny some of the events sparked some Hatter Pride.

  • Dancing the Night Away with Precaution and Excitement.

Airwaves might have been the scariest experience for me during Homecoming Week. Our (Sigma Alpha Iota) theme was Disney Villains, and I had the privilege of receiving Jafar. Doing pirouettes in a skirt is not the best idea, and I spent most of the dance hoping half of my costume wouldn't do a Janet Jackson’s wardrobe malfunction at the Superbowl.

  • Carnival, Comedy Show, Bonfire... the best time to do laundry.

The climax of the week. Let’s be honest, the Pep Rally led up to the after-party; not the game (thank God for the win, though). The bouncy houses, food trucks, the abundance of Public Safety officers was just to prepare us for the student “bonding activities” on Saturday night. I performed with the Elite Stetson Steppers (step team) and I thoroughly enjoyed myself. My amazing parents, who sat front and center, I might add, also attended to watch my team and I perform blessings on stage. Top Hats Dance Team came to give the finale, and then the fire came, literally.

I am a die-hard football fan and not ashamed to say I’m loyal to the Stetson Football team. For others, I applaud you for attending the one home game we were obligated to win. Screaming, chanting, and becoming frustrated were the many actions occurring for me during the game. To the students standing right in front of me, thank you for showing the dedication, but I’m sure the team can feel this emotion from the stands. Realizing the word "winner" would be used for OUR team, I began to feel proud again for buying season tickets.

  • The After Life

Due to the professional vibe emulating from this organization, I shan't go into detail about the bonding event after the football game. I will say I appreciate the IHOP franchise making their restaurants open for 24 hours. Merci beaucoup. Last year, my body handled Homecoming pretty well, considering the amount of dancing and events I participated in. This year, I needed an Ice Pack, REAL food, and TLC; in this case, Netflix.

To the parents out there, Stetson's Homecoming week did not just mean late hours, alcohol, and questionable Snaps for us young adults. It was the time that each student learned how to be a Hatter. This means completing two essays, a group project, or even a case study while making a costume or wondering what to wear to the first football game you’ve ever attended during college.

Stetson, thank you for the memories, good and deformed, from Homecoming Week. As the Fall Semester comes to a rapid close and professors will assign extra “critical thinking assignments,” we now ask for the start of Thanksgiving Break to save us.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
