Where words fail, music speaks.
I feel I can speak for most when I say music has gotten me through some of the hardest times of my life. It has also been there through the happy, silly, excited, anxious, and downright terrifying. Music speaks to people in so many different ways, maybe that's why I love it so much. Sometimes words are too little or too much to express the feeling of sorrow, awe, gratitude, hope, and so much more. A simple melody can touch the soul and move one to tears without saying a single word.
Some don't realize just how intricate different phrases and rhythms can be, while they only hear the beautiful melodies they don't realize that behind the curtain of beautiful tones there is a plethora of chord progressions accompanied by inharmonics, cadences, key and time signatures; this is just scratching the surface of the beauty and genius in a single song. While I am coming to the end of my first semester of college I feel as if I have learned so much while not even coming close to the well of knowledge that music offers. music theory, the reason, and method behind what we as musicians do gives a sense of clarity and further understanding of music, while it still is changing and growing every single day making us musicians stop and stare in awe of its mysterious, ever-changing being.
For some, music is a connection to the world and all of the unique cultures that music has formed. For others, it's a connection to God, for most it's both. While sometimes it feels that we are as far from God as we can possibly be, he finds us again through music. I believe that music is the closest thing that there is on this earth to having a physical relationship with God. Through music we can hear his beauty and awesome grace, we can feel his presence through the vibrations of sound.
Music is the universal language that all can connect to. Wether it is with God or with other people, it bridges a gap that otherwise can not be fulfilled.
