If I Weren't Greek...

A look at what college would be like without Greek life.

If I Weren't Greek...

Exactly one year ago, I never would have pegged myself as a sorority girl. And now, I can't seem to imagine how I would have survived the past year without my sisters.

I've given it a lot of thought and I came to the conclusion that my life would be sad and depressing if I hadn't chosen to go Greek last semester. To show my appreciation for sororities and fraternities, here's a look at what my life would be like if I weren't Greek...

No date parties. I don't know about everyone else, but before I went Greek, I don't think I ever would've shown up to any Greek social function. I'm not the type of girl who likes to go out and find parties to crash every weekend. I'm not bold enough to venture out and just show up to a social or party, and I'm definitely not the type of girl who normal frat guys would want to take to a date/crush party. But after going Greek, I was introduced to this world where every once in a blue moon, you get all dressed up, find a date and show up to this nice venue with loud music, and amazing food. Thank god for Greek Life because I sure do love my food.

Comfort Colors. I never would've experienced the greatest t-shirts ever manufactured. I never would've owned a "frocket" shirt. EVER. My closet would have 65 percent less t-shirts than it does right now, and I would probably only have t-shirts from Virginia Tech and my high school. I would definitely have the lamest college wardrobe on the East Coast. Or maybe even the nation.

Social media. I would have half as many followers on Instagram and Facebook. Since going Greek, my social media accounts have sky rocketed in popularity. The number of "likes" I get on pictures and posts have gone from 25 to 80+. Regardless of how "artsy" or "hype" my pictures are, I know I have a couple hundred sisters to always like my posts for me. It's like an unspoken promise we all have with one another. When a sister posts something on social media, you automatically like it. No matter what.

Lonely nights. Whether I were Greek or not, I'd still be the nerdy engineer I am today. But, if I weren't Greek, I would probably be doing homework by myself in the library until the wee hours of the morning. Thankfully, I've found other nerdy engineers in Greek Life who share my love for the library. The best part about studying with Greek engineers is that they're not weird like normal engineers. If you personally know normal engineers, then you know exactly what I'm talking about. If you don't, be thankful.

Soulmate-less. Not being in Greek Life would mean that I would have two-hundred less best friends than I do right now. I wouldn't have gotten involved in as many extracurricular activities as I'm involved in now. I would never have found the two-hundred girls that I can forever call my absolute best friends and sisters. I never would have connected with so many inspiring women in as short an amount of time as a semester and a half. I wouldn't be a part of this amazing sisterhood that I know will always, ALWAYS have my back. And I never would have imagined having a bond so strong that even thinking about saying goodbye breaks my heart.

If I could go back to exactly one year ago, I wouldn't change my decision about going Greek. I encourage all those who are Greek to forever stand by your organization because they will forever stand by you. For those of you who aren't Greek, I hope you'll consider going Greek because the people you meet will forever change and impact your life for the better. And I promise you, you won't regret going Greek. I know I don't.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
