The original quote by Marilyn Monroe had some good intentions. It says, "I'm selfish, impatient, and a little insecure. I make mistakes, I am out of control and sometimes hard to handle. But if you can't handle me at my worst, then you sure as hell don't deserve me at my best."
In all honesty, it's a decent quote. Your friends, significant other, and family should be able to handle you at your worst and not just leave you because of it. The problem I have with this quote? They shouldn't have to.
Before anyone goes and gets angry, let me clarify. You should be able to show all facets to yourself to your true friends and those that love you. Showing weakness and vulnerability isn't wrong. But, that is NOT your "worst." Calling for support when you're feeling insecure, or taking time for yourself just show that you're human.
The "worst" I'm talking about is being completely and utterly selfish. For some reason, people use the mentality in this quote to treat the people closest to them like absolute shit, and I don't get it. Just like someone should take your needs into consideration, you should probably give the same courtesy, right?
I wish more people did this, but unfortunately I see so many people focus so much on themselves and get mad when others don't. We don't listen to understand, we listen to respond. We try to one-up each other in all situations. It. Needs. To. Stop.
