If You Don't Know Her, Get To Know Her

When you are a junior or senior it can be really hard to get to know the newest pledge class. You see familiar faces, but never learn names or even get to know the freshmen.

It’s so important, however, for the newest members of your chapter to know that they have an entire group of girls from every pledge class, as their sisters and not just the girls who will potentially be their bigs.

Here are three easy steps to making sure you connect with and get to know PC ’14:

1. Be involved in your house.
It’s very normal for juniors and seniors to start becoming less and less involved in their house as time goes on. It becomes a hassle to drive to chapter and to other activities your house is putting on. The more involved you are though, the better you can actually be around the new member class and get to know them. Make that extra effort be involved in your house. You get so much more out of it than you would if you were just involved when it was convenient. Plus it shows the new members that they can count on you to be around.

2. Keep in touch with your family.
Even though you don’t have to go through the whole big little process ever again, you should still be there for your little as she trying to figure out who will be her little. Especially since we all know how crazy of a process it can be. Get to know the girls she temps. Once you have a glittle, or even a gglittle, make sure you are in their lives. Don’t just become the elusive big/gbig. Set up regular family get-togethers and be active in all your family members’ lives. Even if it is just a quick dinner, it means a lot to your family.

3. Make an effort to meet as many new members as you can.
Don’t be the upperclassman who just hangs out with their certain group of friends during the few house events you have. Walk around and try to get to know anyone who you don’t recognize, even if you just go up to them and simply introduce yourself. Take the time to talk to them and get to know the new members. Show them that they don’t have to be intimidated by the fact that you’re a few years older, and that they can come up and talk to you and even get advice anytime they may need it.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday.
