If you know anything about sports you know the Big 12 and college basketball are the Romeo and Juliet of conferences and their sport. The two share a romance that is second to none and have developed a love story that is admired by many. While their passion is beautiful, they have their own family drama much like anyone else. So today, we’re going to breakdown the who’s who of the Big 12 family.
1. Kansas: The Oldest Sister
Kansas is most definitely the older, spoiled sister that her younger brothers hate. She whines about everything, she gets anything she asks for, and if there’s ever and argument daddy (the Big 12 Ref’s) comes and save her. Not to mention she gets all the attention, regardless of how good she is, she’ll always be the star of the family.
2. Baylor: The Youngest Son
Baylor is the youngest brother that is awkward and nobody quite understands. You have to love him because he is your brother, but you’re never quite really sure what he’s up to. Some days he shows up ready to play and have fun, other days he seems to be sleep walking on another planet. We’re just waiting for him to mature and grow out of his mood swings.
3. Iowa State: The Middle Child
Iowa State is the classic middle child in the Big 12 family tree. The kid who is always overlooked, never given much attention and rarely talked about before their older sister Kansas or distant cousin’s Texas and OU. Did you realize ISU has only lost at home 3 times in the last 3 years? Nope, no else probably did either. Poor Iowa state, you’ll have your day sometime soon.
4. West Virginia: The Roughhousing Cousin
West Virginia is the prime example of the redneck cousin you only see a couple times a year and every time you are left thinking, how in the world are we related? From the mountaineer mascot to the backwoods way of living in Morgantown it’s probably best we only interact twice a year. The rest of the family couldn’t take this roughhousing cousin any more than that.
5. Texas: The Perfect Cousin
Texas is the perfect cousin your grandma can never stop talking about. Every year this cousin is the best at everything he does. He always makes great grades and is always making grandma SO proud. His picture is always on the front of the refrigerator and you certainly can’t miss when he is coming to town…everyone makes a big fuss about it. The rest of the family doesn’t see what’s so great about him but hey, you don’t have to deal with him too much anyway.
6. Kansas State: Your Poor Uncle-In-Law
Kansas State is you sad uncle that is always over shadowed by the in-laws, or instate rival Kansas. He never really gets any of the attention and always comes second. No matter how hard he works he’ll always just be an outsider to his family. He puts up a good fight every year against the in-laws over in Lawrence but they usually come out on top. It’s okay though because the rest of the family is always rooting for him. We’ve all had our fair share of run-ins with those nasty JayHawks…don’t let them get you down.
7. Oklahoma State: Cowboy Uncle
Oklahoma is your down-home, country uncle that you love to see every once in a while. He’s hardworking, doesn’t take no for an answer and always shows up in good style. He might not be the best but he’s competitive and at the end of the day you like having him around. He usually flies under the radar, but always put up a good fight. He’s the meat and potatoes of the big 12 family.
8. Oklahoma: Big Brother
Oklahoma is the big brother that everyone wants to compete with. At family Thanksgiving he’s always the first one to grab the football and start up a game, even though it seems he always wins. He’s hard to beat but you love him and look up to him for his competitive edge and work ethic. He’s the leader of the younger brothers.
9. TCU: Second Cousin
TCU is your quirky second cousin that you would completely forget about if not for yearly family reunions. You don’t really remember much about the last time you saw them and they probably won’t really stand out again this year. Every once in a while they have something good to add, but more or less you’re nothing alike. It’s fine though, they’re part of the family.
10. Texas Tech: The Oddball
Texas Tech is the annoying cousin you see at family events that you really try to stay away from. You never know what kind of a curve ball they’re gonna throw at you so it’s best to just avoid them all together. Things get really awkward when they get on a roll, so you might as well just listen to the your grandma talk about that reallllly cool trip she just took for the 3rd time. Avoid interaction if you know what’s best for your sanity.
