That time of the year has begun to approach us. The academic school calendar is winding down, exams are approaching, formals are happening, and weather is warming, and there is a promise of incredible summer vacations in the air. Unless you are like me.
Once upon a time, I was more than excited for the last day of school; I even began counting backwards as soon as mid-March approached every year. However, I am about to end my first full year as a college student and I am holding on to my last two weeks stronger than any championship eight-second ride.
If you're anything like me, you honor your college town almost as much as the city of Jerusalem (of you're into Jesus stuff, that is). The sacred grounds on which your university was built on is considered Holy ground by all means and is the crème de la crème of all other college towns. After all, you didn't just pick your university for surrounding party scene the wonderful academics, right? Thoughts of leaving your college town brings tears to your eyes as it is more depressing than your current GPA. Don't worry, you're not alone.
I will admit, I am a college town snob.
Although this is my first year as a college student, I have grown to love my college's town more than any other place in the world. It may be due to the fact that I grew up in a small, conservative, nothing-to-do town or because my college's town is literally the best city in the world. I have learned to grow as an independent person. I have created my own daily routine and preferences. Here, I can be any person that I wish to be and still be myself. In this town, the possibilities are endless for me. Even though I do occasionally find myself trapped in my dorm with no where to go, I would rather spend it here than in my hometown. I admit, I am a college town snob.
Still unsure of what a college town snob is? Allow me to explain. A college town snob is a term that I have come to use for myself quite frequently.
College Town Snob: One who believes that the city which his/her university is located is superior to all other cities, specifically other college cities, his/her hometown, and or neighboring cities.
Example: Jackie-Oh my gosh, Memphis has no where to shop. The Oxford Square always has so many cute places to shop!
Karen-Jackie, stop being a college town snob. Oxford is not as great as you think it is.
Most people are in denial about being a college town snob. But, that's okay. It happens to the best of us. However, it is always nice to be aware of your status. You might be a college town snob if:
- You never want to go to a party back home because they will never be able to top the glorious beer showers and concerts that are thrown at the fraternities back at school.
- You think the pool of men in your hometown is comprised of incompetent baboons with no game
- Every Tinder contestant within a 100 mile radius look similar to Chief Keef or Jay Z.
- Your greatest comeback is "Oh, you went to school where, ?"
- You pray for your friends who are stuck at a junior college
- Using "You remind me of a person I went to high school with" is an insult to people.
- You are constantly comparing everything from you college town to your angelical college town
- You are frequently annoyed by the lack of diversity and immense amount of simple mindedness of the residents in your hometown
- You find your sisters/friends from school more interesting than your friends back home
- You find yourself harshly judging everyone who returns to your hometown after undergraduate
- You Facebook stalk people to enjoy their misery of being stuck in your hometown forever
- The fact that people actually go back homeboggles your mind
- Home refers to your dorm/apartment back in your college town
- You always use the excuse "Well back at school we usually do it this way" and people who don't do it the right way absolutely kill you.
- You frequently email your former professors just to see how they are doing over the summer.
- You find yourself dramatically loading your car up with all of your belongings, waving to your once hated dorm room good bye, going on a drinking binge (other wise known as "the last weekend"), having one last dinner outing with your sisters, sadly returning all borrowed items to their rightful owners, filling your gas tank up with tears, and giving your college boyfriend one last kiss before September, and then (like the movies) drive off into the sunset while playing some type of sad instrumental
music (dramatically looking out of the window, of course).
I never thought that I would ever say it, but I cannot wait for summer to be over so I can be home-sweet-home again.
