The news as we know is biased. In the United States, news sources are so focused on national news that often worldwide issues, such as the refugee crisis, are deemed as not as important. Hence, Americans know more about the Kardashian family and the presidential race, instead of international news.
According to a new CNN article, this week, more than 700 refugees, seeking a new home in Italy and Greece, have gone missing in the Mediterranean Sea and are most likely dead. There were at least three shipwrecks in the Mediterranean. All of the boats that have sunk were carrying migrants from violent and war-torn countries. Currently, there are over 50 million refugees that are displaced from their homes and millions of those refugees have sought refuge in a foreign country.
There have been more than 1,000 migrant deaths this year so far, according to CNN. Not only is that horrible, but the media coverage on the refugee crisis has been weak. I had to look through pages of news headlines online before finding recent articles on the refugee crisis.
There are two ways for the refugee crisis to improve and help migrants seeking refuge in a foreign country. One is to increase the media coverage on refugees. Because of the recent migrant issues, more international organizations, such as Doctors Without Borders, have heard about the latest shipwrecks and have sent boats and supplies to help migrants land safely in a new country, instead of relying on boats that have been continuously shipwrecked. Another way to help is to persuade countries to accept more migrants. Greece and Macedonia have essentially shut down their borders to refugees, causing more deaths, due to the increased illegal risk for migrants to live in a foreign country. There are millions of refugees in the world, and it is not going to end anytime soon, so countries should cooperate and just allow refugees into their countries, as long as the country is willing and is able to support a large number of refugees.
Although the refugee crisis is a complex issue, there is no reason why hundreds of people should be missing and presumed dead because of wanting to seek a new life in a safe European country. Since migrants are continually trying to seek refuge in countries near the Mediterranean Sea, the death toll will presumably increase within the next few weeks and months. Until countries and organizations are 100 percent committed to helping refugees, the limited supplies that are being offered to help migrants will have to be enough.
