Human Touch (Screen)

I thought we're social.

Human Touch (Screen)

I hear people my age say “we’re living in a point of time in history that it’s OK” while I still hear elders say, “why can’t you look up every once in a while?” Owning a phone is extremely important in this day and age, as it can be a beautiful thing; we can talk to someone from the other side of the earth through a small device immediately whenever and whomever we want. I start questioning what is our world becoming when we choose to cut ourselves off to our phones over human interaction.

I will never be against the cellphone because it’s such a useful tool that comes with so much information. It’s a way we can stay to date with the news and connects us to a close but distant online community. I love having a phone for the reason of reaching anyone in seconds without burning more than 10 calories. Information is transferred faster so we receive more and cut so much time out of our day to be more efficient. Can you imagine when phones didn’t exist? If you wanted to see someone you would have to knock on their door to see whether or not they want to hang out with you. Phones make life so much easier; but now they are just equally used for entertainment purposes.

Have you ever used your phone to get out of a social situation? Here’s a self-check for ourselves:

1. Have you ever stepped into an elevator and instead of standing free-handed, looked down at your phone till it was your floor to get out?

2. Have you ever pretended to be talking on the phone when you know you’ll be passing people you don’t want to talk to?

3. Have you ever interacted with someone on social media more than in person?

My last question asks if you ever interacted with someone on social media more than in person. It’s so easy to like a Facebook picture or message an acquaintance “happy birthday” as half the people who do that to me on Facebook are distant friends. I’ll admit I do the same things too because these are still kind acts, but what if we did these things in person? It would make someone’s day 10 times better because it’s real life human interaction.

Human touch is more powerful than words or pictures on a screen.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
