It is certainly not every week that you can say for the first time in history a female is the presumptive nominee for President of the United States for a major political party. But I am certainly glad it is one of those historical weeks.
This week former Secretary of State and former First Lady Hillary Clinton clinched the needed of number of primary delegates to secure the democratic nominee for President of the United States. She currently has 2,784 combined pledged and super delegates, far surpassing the 2,383 needed to guarantee her the nomination against Senator Bernie Sanders at the upcoming Democratic National Convention.
Yes I realize many people won't be impressed or moved by this moment in history for a variety of reasons, but I for one am so proud in this week to be an American woman. In her success Hillary Clinton has proved to be a role model solely on the basis of showing that women can do anything they want to including succeed in a male dominated field of work. Now although there are many Americans who dislike Hillary for her past actions and viewpoints, there are also many who do like her. So it is important to stay impartial on what side you believe in and use this moment in history as a teaching moment for young girls that the sky is the limit and that you can do anything including run for the highest political position in the US.
I also think it is truly crazy that since the birth of America in 1776, it took us until 2016 to finally have the sense to put a strong female up as major political parties candidate for President. I mean it makes sense it took us 144 years until 1920 to finally give women the right to vote and subsequently some hold on power in American society. American women across the country no matter who or what they believe in can realize the significance of this moment. Real strong women are what this country is based on. Do you really think the founding fathers would have made it that far and won in the American Revolution without some strong women supporting them? I am going to say no on this one and say it was about time a woman gets to step up and represent an entire political party in the race for President.
Hillary Clinton's presumptive nominee 'victory' speech opened with the video below and man is it powerful. The pride I felt watching strong women throughout history culminating in this historical moment this week made me smile with pride.
So whether you are a democrat, republican, independent or honestly don't even know what party you are, whether you like Hillary Clinton or not, take a moment to step back and bask in this first in our countries history. 'First times' for things don't come around too often anymore so when they do appreciate them, learn something new and wait for the next 'first time' to roll around. Congrats to HIllary Clinton on her nomination to be the Democrat's Presidential Nominee. It certainly was a well fought primary season and one that ended in lots of history... #imwithher
