Teenagers of the world vary vastly in many different ways. From appearance to interests, no one teen is exactly the same. There is one huge similarity we all share however, that being that we all encounter the educational system at one point in our lives. Some stop at high school, others will never stop perusing a higher education. With all these people going to school, you would think that universities would do everything in their power to accommodate students right? Well, the truth is they don’t. Based on what I’ve seen, there is a huge problem with the education system and it’s solely that too many universities make their main priority getting money rather than student’s happiness and convenience. Universities value the dollar more than they do their students.
As a student myself, I have encountered countless instances where student’s mental health must be compromised for schoolwork. Although it is college, and a certain workload is to be expected, professors seem to not understand that while their six-page paper may not be that bad, students have other classes to attend to. Suddenly that mere six-page paper turns into a paper, three projects, one test, five worksheets, and a quiz, and it’s only Monday. With all of that due, there comes to be no relaxation time. You end up having to skip meals to study, forget about the gym, sleep is nowhere near the recommended amount, and all of this done just to get the grades needed for your program or even your scholarship. Students end up practically killing themselves in fear of losing their education, a fact that is upsetting especially when colleges don’t do anything to help students with their work loads.
Another downfall of the educational system is the cost. School tuition is enough to put you in debt for years upon years. For some colleges, the tuition price can be double others, it is as if you’re paying double for “brand name,” but with college instead of clothes. Some college's tuition can be as much as $60,000 dollars a semester. A high price to pay for a little piece of paper with your qualifications on it. With all this tuition going into school, you would expect to be taught in a solid gold room, and the expensive cost of housing would make you think you were living in the Ritz. Unfortunately, your $60,000 will give you classrooms with minute desks and a dorm the size of a shoe box with communal showers that clog every time they are in use.
With conditions like these, it really makes you wonder where all your money is exactly going. It sure as hell isn’t going to the professors, considering you’re practically teaching yourself in college and the professor acts merely as a human syllabus. Don’t get me wrong, there are some amazing professors out there who truly teach their students, but too often it is the case that the shitty professors are more prevalent. This is a huge problem that needs to stop. It is too often that we encounter difficult professors who have no compassion or consideration for their students. I say this is ridiculous due to the fact that we, the students, practically pay their salary with our huge tuition checks.
The bottom line is that our higher education system is severely flawed and no one seems to be doing anything to fix it. The cost, the tolls it takes on our bodies, and the conditions are all things that should not be tolerated anymore. Students make up the majority of the population of the world, so why not use this advantage in our size to make a difference?
