How You Know Your Grandpa Was A CHP Officer

Growing up, Papa always had so many stories to tell. Even now, his stories seem endless, he can never run out of things to share with his grandkids! One of the best things about Papa is that all his stories tie back to his experiences as a California Highway Patrol (CHP) Officer. There are a few things that I'm certain only grandchildren (and children) of any type of officer, public servants, first responders, etc.

1. He tells you how to get out of tickets.

Yup. It's true. Grandpa is always the first one to go to when you get that parking ticket. He knows exactly what you should do, and when you should fight your ticket. You can never go wrong with the advice of someone who used to write tickets!

2. You can name drop his name to get out of a ticket.

It wasn't until about eight years after my Grandpa retired when his name couldn't get you out of a ticket. (Seriously, though, even some of my high school teachers told me because they actually knew my grandpa they've gotten out of tickets)

3. You know everything about Smokey The Bear.

Need I say more?

4. Taking field trips to Grandma's house with the cousins to see Grandpa's badge and handcuffs.

5. You always hear the stories about how much trouble your aunts/uncles caused.

6. You know the odd laws and restrictions within your community.

Once I got my license, Papa has always made sure to remind me and my friends about the certain areas where laws do not apply, and where cops will be on the lookout.

7. You know that once you get started talking, it won't end for at least an hour.

Like I said, Papa is a storyteller. He has so many experiences from his career that once he gets started sharing he won't stop, and you won't want him to!

Lastly...

You know one of your grandparents was an officer when you are inspired daily by the passion, dedication, and determination they put into their career. My grandpa loved serving and helping the people. He wasn't just doing this job because it secured a good bank account for the family, he chooses this career because he has a heart of a servant.

Papa if you're reading this, know that you have inspired all of us grandchildren to find a career that makes them happy, but gives to the people. You are so loving and care so much about your entire family. Your stories are to die for, and I appreciate every time you share one of your experiences with me!

I think the hardest thing about going away to college is figuring out how to become an adult. Leaving a household where your parents took care of literally everything (thanks, Mom!) and suddenly becoming your own boss is overwhelming. I feel like I'm doing a pretty good job of being a grown-up, but once in awhile I do something that really makes me feel like I'm #adulting. Twenty-somethings know what I'm talking about.

I went to a small high school, like 120-people-in-my-graduating-class small. It definitely had some good and some bad, and if you also went to a small high school, I’m sure you’ll relate to the things that I went through.

1. If something happens, everyone knows about it

Who hooked up with whom at the party? Yeah, heard about that an hour after it happened. You failed a test? Sorry, saw on Twitter last period. Facebook fight or, God forbid, real fight? It was on half the class’ Snapchat story half an hour ago. No matter what you do, someone will know about it.

Chandler Bing

I'm assuming that we've all heard of the hit 90's TV series, Friends, right? Who hasn't? Admittedly, I had pretty low expectations when I first started binge watching the show on Netflix, but I quickly became addicted.

Without a doubt, Chandler Bing is the most relatable character, and there isn't an episode where I don't find myself thinking, Yup, Iam definitely the Chandler of my friend group.

Working with the public can be a job, in and of itself. Some people are just plain rude for no reason. But regardless of how your day is going, always having to be in the best of moods, or at least act like it... right?

1. When a customer wants to return a product, hands you the receipt, where is printed "ALL SALES ARE FINAL" in all caps.

2. Just because you might be having a bad day, and you're in a crappy mood, doesn't make it okay for you to yell at me or be rude to me. I'm a person with feelings, just like you.

3. People refusing to be put on hold when a customer is standing right in front of you. Oh, how I wish I could just hang up on you!
