How We're Not All The Same

It’s safe to say that we're all guilty of making someone feel like less of a person for liking or doing something just because we don’t like it. It’s also fair to say that we have assumed something about someone else based off the actions of people we believe to be like them. We need to stop doing this and realize we’re not all the same.

Society continues to believe that it’s acceptable to judge strangers for doing things we wouldn’t do ourselves. Everyone has things in life that they don’t like which is fine. It becomes a problem when we tell others to not do things just because we don't like it. There's a difference between joking with friends and making fun of strangers. We're all on the same level in the sense that nobody is better than anyone else and yes this even includes Beyoncé.

We’ve all grown up in different environments that have shaped us into the person we are today.

You’re not me and I’m not you

We are not all by any means the same. Sometimes people see that as a negative thing. I don’t think I could handle the world if every single person were exactly alike. In fact, if everyone was exactly like me I’d go insane. What makes the world a diverse and interesting place is that we all have little quirks and things that make us unique.

We can’t continue to be walking around with these superiority complexes. There are so many things that people judge others for just because they don’t choose to live their lives the same way. Some people like going out, being vegan, shopping, reading, watching movies, and so many other things. The way someone chooses to live is only their concern and nobody else’s.

You’re not them and they aren’t you

I cannot express how many times people have assumed something about someone else because of their race. It’s amazing how people will cross the street if they see an African-American person approaching. How they’ll tense up if they’re sitting next to an Arabic person on a plane. How they’ll assume an overweight person is just lazy. Nobody can know exactly what a person is like just from looking at him or her. Making assumptions about someone because of their physical appearance is one of the worst things that we as a society can do.

We’ve all gotten looks and judgments whether it is from race, gender, sexuality, the way we talk, or what we do in general. Basically, for just doing what makes us happy. How can people sit around and tell me not to do what makes me happy, or stop acting a certain way to avoid a certain stereotype?

In a world where we should be celebrating our differences we spend way too much time reflecting on them, and trying to turn people into something they are not. It may simply be in our personalities, or the fact that we were never taught better but we should learn that being the same would be a burden and not a blessing.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
