10 Reasons Why It Is OK To Fit In The Popular Culture

In modern society, there is always a big desire to fit into what is known as the "counterculture." From Greasers in the 1950s to Hippies in the 1960s, we find that not fitting in, is the most popular option. Sometimes though, we cannot fight our inner desire to follow what's popular. Most of the time there is a reason an item is popular in the first place. There is such a stigma on joining the in crowd that we as a society forget what we're missing out on. Here's a couple things that all people should be able to enjoy, even if it means they're a basic b*tch.

1. Seasonal Drinks

Everyone likes to act like the hype over coffee shops seasonal flavors is so ridiculous, but I disagree. When I see a sign that says "New Flavors 'Pumpkin Fun Time!' and "Reindeer Giggles!' out now!" I get excited because that means the holidays are here and everyone loves the holidays. So by hating on this one you're being a Grinch to everyone enjoying their warm tasty drinks. Not to mention that these flavors are in fact delicious. So make fun of "Pumpkin Fun Time!" all you want, but you know it's damn delicious. Also these flavors are only offered for a limited time, so if I get a craving for a "Reindeer Giggles" coffee in the summer, then I'm sh*t out of luck. So go on and get excited about fun new drinks every season, because they're only there for a short amount of time, and they're festive fun for everyone.

2. Popular Clothing

The two main reasons that people consume clothing in this day and age is because they're comfortable, and fashionable. What is wrong with wanting both of these? Victoria's Secret in particular has great merchandise. I'm speaking from personal experience for a second; I've never had a wire pop out of a bra from their company in all the times I've bought one, which is a lot. They also have great deals! Seven pairs of underwear for $27, sign me up! Two bras for $45, yes please! So not only are they affordable with their deals, good and long lasting products, but they are also so darn adorable and come in all styles, from girly polka dot, to black and lacy. For the ladies out there I know it's a hassle having to buy bras and underwear, but if you're going to do it, then treat yourself.

3. Music

You know why Taylor Swift is played on the radio ten times a day? Because that's how many times I want to hear her every day. She makes me feel like an empowered lady. Her songs are popular because they speak to a generation of young girls and boys about what it's like to stand up for yourself and show your passion to the world. She is not only a great role model, but a very talented singer. So if listening to popular, and what I consider to be "good" music is frowned upon, then what do people expect? Everyone has their own tastes and styles when comes to music and there is no one mold to fit into when it comes to "good" music. If it's considered basic because it's popular, isn't that a good thing?

4. Selfies

The selfie is more than just making a duck face, it is a form of expression and allows a person to capture a moment in time. Maybe that's a little too deep for a #selfie, but that's just how my boat floats. Seeing someone post a selfie online doesn't bother or hurt anyone, if fact I love it because yes I want to see your "ootd," and girl where did you get that lipstick?! Posting a selfie is a way to put yourself out there and leave yourself open to judgement. It shows the world that that day you love a certain part about yourself so much that you want to share it with others no matter what. If loving and appreciating yourself is basic then there's nothing wrong with that.

5. Television Shows

Like we all don't wish we were rich teenagers living in the Upper East Side? The majority of people who watch Gossip Girl do not fit the demographic of the characters on the show. They just have a desire to be like them. Is it such an absurd notion that someone wants to be fashionable and wealthy? Yes the show may be slightly absurd (They are not 21 at any point during the whole series and they never get carded at bars!), and a little out there, but that's the point of entertainment. If the show was about middle class kids living in Brooklyn, it wouldn't have the same appeal because some people actually do live those lives. Viewers want to see something they cannot have because it does not occur in real life. Also, the show has great and unforgettable characters such as Chuck Bass and Serena van der Woodsen that people keep coming back for. So yes, I will binge watch all six seasons on Netflix and pretend I'm Blair Waldorf because it brings me joy.

6. Icons

One of the many great icons is Audrey Hepburn. Tell me, why is it basic to look up to someone who's talented, beautiful, kind hearted, and soulful? I've written a previous article about the bastardization of Marilyn Monroe's legacy, explaining how pop culture leads to a certain disrespect of some incredible people. Audrey's is the same case. Just because a large number of people like her does not take away from her value. So go ahead and hang that poster up of her in your bedroom, because she is worth looking at every day.

7. Romantic Movies

Romance is not dead! I myself am not a fan of Nicholas Sparks personally, but that doesn't mean we don't all love a good tear jerker. Yes, maybe Ryan Gosling set unattainable goals for men everywhere, but odds are that's not going to happen in real life, so let the people enjoy watching it happen to Rachel McAdams by living vicariously through her! Movies are meant to allow us to live other lives through the comfort of our own home. If someone prefers the genre of romance then let the lovers of love be. There's nothing wrong with seeing someone go through trials to end up with the person they love. Everyone loves love, and sometimes we like to give in and watch love too.

8. Slang

We all use it. Every generation has it. The 1950's would say "Daddy-o!" and the 1920's would say "Cat's Pajamas!" It might sound ridiculous and be obnoxious, but it is a part of our culture. This one I just have to say get over it. So what if a teenager wants to be hip with the times. You can't change culture by acting like you're too superior to use terms like "Turn up" or "Get turnt," because that's just how it is. There's nothing wrong with using modern vocabulary, so don't be afraid to describe your eyebrows as "on-fleek." Odds are, our kids are going to think we were ridiculous too and they're going to be using words we don't understand either.

9. Chain Restaurants

There is a reason why everyone is going stark crazy over these chain restaurants and that is for one very import reason. Their food is delicious. Why else would so many people have it in such a demand? Why is it basic to want delicious food? Also, Chipotle is healthy for you. So of course so many people want to consume delicious, fast, and healthy food. That's what makes it so popular in the first place. Just because the majority of people want to eat at this establishment, doesn't mean you have to be a snob and reject it due to it's popularity. Who knows maybe Mexican food just isn't your thing, but that's beside the point. So if you do give in to your basic needs, might I suggest the burrito bowl.

10. Tiny Dogs

(Actual picture of mydog Charlie)

Just because Paris Hilton created the trend of using tiny dogs as an accessory, doesn't mean they're around just for that purpose. They make great little companions that everyone wants to meet. They're very portable, especially when they're being naughty. You can easily just pick them up and take them away from the situation. They also don't take up much bed space when they're cuddling; like living stuffed animals, just don't squeeze them too hard. Having a small dog doesn't mean you're being basic, it just means that you want a little friend. Also, your dog has little legs and can't always run away fast enough when they try to eat your Victoria's Secret underwear.

So go ahead and be as basic as you want, because being basic isn't always a bad thing. We all have a little basic in us all because odds are, we can't deny all the great aspects of what is considered to be "basic" and more. Sometimes it's nice to treat yourself and if that means fitting into the "basic b*tch" category, then so be it. It's wrong to label yourself and others as one thing, which leads to my firm belief that everyone has a little bit of basic in them. So snuggle up with a tiny dog in your Victoria's Secret pajamas while sipping a hot cup of "Reindeer Giggles" coffee and watching Gossip Girl, because we all deserve the finer things in life.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
