If you're like me, you like experimenting with makeup. I'm constantly watching makeup reviews on YouTube and talking makeup with friends. When I first heard people were wearing the blue lipstick, my first thought was "Ah, yes, to look like Smurfette." But after scrolling through Pinterest and Instagram, it started to grow on me. Blue is such a beautiful color on so many skin tones. What better way to show your love for summer than to try a bright, bold lipstick?
- Find the right blue for your skin tone.
If your skin tone is cool, find a blue that has a green undertone. If your skin tone is warm, find a blue with a purple undertone. It may take some searching, but using a blue that compliments your skin tone will minimize any awkward contrasts.

- Whiten your teeth.
Blue could bring out a yellow color to your teeth. Try using whitening strips, or (if you're as broke as I am) try popping open a charcoal pill onto a clean tooth brush and brush like normal. After 5 minutes, rinse your mouth and brush your teeth with tooth paste. This can brighten your teeth up to two shades!
- Exfoliate your lips.
This should be done before applying any lipstick, but it is a necessity when wearing a color that will attract extra attention to your lips. Use a natural sugar lip scrub from E.L.F. or Lush Cosmetics, followed by a moisturizing lip balm to get your lips ready for color!
- Use it as your accessory.
This pop of unusually beautiful color should be your main accessory. Tone down the rest of your outfit by wearing neutral colors. As for your other accessories, keep it simple by only wearing silver or gold pieces. The highlight of the outfit is the blue lip!
- Face makeup.
When it comes to makeup, a good rule of thumb is to either have bold lips or bold eyes. Tone down your face and eye makeup to avoid the looking like a clown. Simple eyeliner and mascara on the eyes and light contouring and highlighting on the face is really all you need.
- Start with purple.
You can dip your toe in the pool of colors instead of diving right in. If you're not sure if the bold look is right for you, try out a lavender or purple color for a day. Purple is a mix between red (or pink) and blue. It could be your bridge from an everyday pink to the beautiful blue!
- Confidence.
The key to a crazy lip color is to wear it confidently. Throw your shoulders back and sport the color like it's every other day. Experimenting with makeup can be scary! But who knows, maybe blue will become your favorite summer lip color.
