Social media gets a bad rap these days, particularly when combined with teenagers. There are plenty of examples of ways that people use social media in a manner that’s not productive or beneficial. However, social media is not inherently bad. When on social media, it’s important to bring a positive perspective. No one likes a Negative Nancy (or Ned). Here are a few ways that social media can be used to encourage and benefit others.
One of the strengths of Facebook is that almost everyone has it. Whether you want to keep up with your grandparents, your crazy aunt, or your favorite professor, Facebook gives you a glimpse into their lives. Next time you run into your best friend from fourth grade you’ll have something to talk about. “How was your vacation in the Bahamas?” Boom. Instant conversation starter. Additionally, tagging someone in a funny picture or video lets them know that you’re thinking about them. Hopefully, it will also make them laugh. Friendship points!
Instagram is a personal favorite for me. I love to take and edit snapshots of my life and coordinate my pictures so that they match a common theme. Besides using it as a creative outlet, I follow my friends to see what’s going on in their lives. Maybe someone changed their hair, maybe they got a new puppy. Often, I leave comments on my friend’s photos. Sometimes they’re funny, sometimes they’re encouraging. In either case, it’s a good way to let people know that I care about their lives.
SnapChat
This one seems a little trickier. Admittedly, there are more pitfalls when it comes to SnapChat. However, there are some positive ways even for this one. For instance, sending a SnapChat is much faster than taking a picture and texting it. See a person who looks exactly like your friend? You can subtly snap them a pic. Now they know you’re thinking of them. You can also send an encouraging “good morning” message featuring your smiling face to many people at the same time. Multitasking.
The Real Purpose
One of the best ways to use social media productively is to share truth. Find a bible verse that really spoke to your situation? You can share that with others. Have you seen God really working in your life? That’s encouraging stuff! Don’t hide it away, you can use it to encourage the other people around you. Seeing other people who are being diligent to read their bibles and pray can be an example to me when I’m feeling tired or unmotivated. Don’t pass up the opportunity to uplift others.
To Sum Up
In my mind there are two things I think about before posting something. Number one: is this positive? And number two: am I posting this for selfish reasons? There are times when all of us have put something out there just because we know we will get a pat on the back for it. However, if we want to use social media in a healthy way, we’ve got to make sure our motives aren’t self-seeking. Sharing your life with the people around you isn’t bad, but make sure it’s encouraging and helpful. Online is forever. What kind of legacy will you leave?
