When you come to college, making friends can be pretty easy and you expect those friendships to last a lifetime. It is hard to find out who is really there for you and who is not. Not everyone is meant to be best friends for life, but it doesn't mean you or them should be disrespectful. These are some tips to find who isn't meant to be.
They will take advantage of you
They only want to hang out when it's convenient for them. A real friend won't use you for your money, your car, or your homework, etc.
They will find excuses not to hangout
They will say they have class, need to study, or already have plans every time you asked them to hang out. They might make plans with you but just cancel them later.
You will change yourself for them
You will try to do things that make them happy, even when you do not want to do them. You will feel like a completely different person when you are around them. You won't like yourself around them, but you'll only care that they like you.
They will judge you to your face.
When you are around them, they will make comments about you. Judging the way you dress, the way you talk, or just trying to put you down in general. They might call you names to your face or to other people. They will talk bad about you or spread rumors to other people behind your back.
They aren't there for you
If you are there for them when they are going through a bad time, but they won't be there for you when you need a friend. They will try to turn it around on you by saying if someone was disrespectful or hurtful to you; they will make comments to feel as if it is your fault.
It's a one-way street
When you are the only one asking to hang out, but they never ask you to hang out. They do not put any effort into you when you give them you're all.
If a friend has a couple or more of these traits they probably aren't the friend for you. A true friend will always be there for you through thick and thin. They will never gossip about you, nor let others gossip about you. It might take a couple of heartbreaks and paths, but you will find the people who are there for you.
