How To Spot The Long Island Friend

You can take the kid out of Long Island, but not the Long Island out of the kid.

While most people's accents give away where they're from, Long Islanders have a lengthy list of things that hint to others that they reside in either the 516 or the 631. That being said, here are just 10 out of the millions of ways to spot the Long Islander in the friend group.

1. They're always complaining about how the pizza's just not as good as it is at home

If you know, you know.

2. They're obsessed with bagels

While most people crave chocolate, candy, cookies and sweets, you can always tell that the one ranting about how they NEED a bacon egg and cheese on a bagel is the one from Long Island.

3. Their Instagram page looks significantly like other Long Islanders' pages

Wrangler pictures, girls holding American flags in just about every place imaginable, groups of tattooed guys staring dead at the camera in lacrosse pinnies, 900 beach pictures of Tobay, Jones Beach, Robert Moses, Fire Island, and Montauk; welcome to the feed of a Long Islander.

4. They know EVERYONE

"How do you know them?"

"Oh, they're from Long Island too."

5. They've played lacrosse at some point in their life

Long islanders seem to have been born with the natural ability to play lax -- it's just a thing. Lacrosse and beer pong seem to be the two sports that Long Islanders pride themselves in most. Yes, I did just call pong a sport. Don't think it is? You must not be from Long Island.

6. They're constantly getting made fun of for their accents

"Say coffee!" "Say water!" "Say dog!"

7. They're oddly patriotic

You already know that if there's a beer Olympics, the kid from Long Island is the one screaming about how they want to be on team America.

8. They leave these little clips behind everywhere they go

If you see a girl with this in her hair, she's from the Island.

9. Other people can't stand when they're in charge of the AUX

You can tell the person in charge of the AUX cord is from Long Island when the songs go from hardcore rap to sing along country music with zero notice, and they see absolutely nothing wrong with it.

10. They'll shoot you a death stare if you dare say, "in Long Island"

They simply cringe when someone says "in Long Island" -- it's ON Long Island, ON!!

While we can be annoying and while we never shut up about how much we love our home, bagels, iced coffee and beaches, we are one big Long Island family who, no matter how loud and obnoxious we get, are proud to call our island home.`

As college students, we are all familiar with the horror show that is course registration week. Whether you are an incoming freshman or selecting classes for your last semester, I am certain that you can relate to how traumatic this can be.

1. When course schedules are released and you have a conflict between two required classes.

Bonus points if it is more than two.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

April Ludgate

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
