We all know what basic girls are like. They carry Starbucks everywhere they go. They know every line in the movie "Mean Girls." Their Instagram captions are mostly lyrics from rappers like Drake or Childish Gambino. Their wardrobe is not complete without Urban Outfitters, Lululemon, and Brandy Melville. T-shirts are comfortable but most comfortable when they’re Comfort Colors. They’ve been at least one of these following animals for Halloween: a bunny, a mouse, or any feline species. You get it. Basic girls are ubiquitous, and they get shit for it. I mean, it’s so easy to make fun of them, because they’re easy to spot.
But what about basic boys? Believe it or not, they’re just as common, and here’s how to spot one:
- If he has at least one superhero onesie in his closet.
- If he played at least one varsity sport in high school and still talks about it.
- If his shorts stop mid-thigh.
- If he owns a pair of beer or drinking-related boxers.
- If he frequently uses the words “hype," “fire," or “savage” where another word would be more applicable.
- If he orders products you can find at the store on Amazon.
- If he practices the art of “ghosting” but has no idea what that means.
- If he has a profile picture on Facebook that has cropped out everything but his face.
- If he uses the phrase “Netflix and chill” in a joking manner but is also kind of serious about it.
- If he regularly quotes Will Ferrell movies.
- If he waits until he has absolutely run out of clean clothing to do his laundry.
- If he says “high key” or “low key."
- If he relies on fraternity connections to outweigh academics and work experience.
- If he involves alcohol in activities where alcohol is not needed.
- If he has Kygo on every Spotify playlist.
- If he's gone to an EDM concert as an excuse to experiment with drugs.
- If he relies on one personality quirk to reaffirm his “unique” individuality, i.e. being able to cook, being born in a foreign country, or having an accent.
- If he wears athletic wear when he is not working out or doing anything physical.
- If most of his clothes are t-shirts because he does not have a particular “style.”
- If he’s seriously considered becoming a rapper or a professional athlete at one point in his life.
If a guy fits into most of these characteristics, props to you, because you found yourself a basic boy. And I’ll admit it. We’re all a little basic ourselves, but what’s not to love about having things in common with other people?
