Netflix. Netflix. Netflix. If you ask me what I’m doing tonight, more often than not this will be the answer. Netflix seems to be the go-to idea of our generation. Inviting your girlfriends over often turns into, “Did you see the new Netflix original series, 'Jessica Jones?' No? Well, let’s watch it.”
Netflix offers a variety of TV shows and movies, giving every type of person something to spend the next weeks of their lives on—days if you’re awesome and hours if you’re hardcore. Our generation has also invented the notorious “Netflix and chill.” Don’t. Just don’t accept an invitation to Netflix and chill. You won’t watch any of your favorite Netflix shows he promises and that would be quite a shame.
Now being hardcore and watching a Netflix series in mere hours seems like a daunting task, especially on top of all those homework assignments, book chapters to read and online quizzes to do. You might not think you can do it. But you can. I believe in you. Don’t inform your RA of all the homework you have to do, and then tell her you're going to start and finish a TV series the same night, because she will not believe in you.
It’s better to just believe in yourself, and think of all the great new experiences you get to live through other people’s lives. Plus, if that cute boy in your class starts talking about "The IT Crowd," you’ll be ready to joke in—“Have you tried turning it on and off again?” So Netflix = catching a cute boy’s attention, which is always a gold star for the day.
I’m not saying don’t do your homework. But don’t not let yourself watch Netflix either. Turning on a show you’ve already watched, like "Supernatural," will suffice while you diligently work on that online quiz. It may take you twice as long to finish the quiz as it normally would… But Netflix.
Watching an entire series in one night may lead you to not knowing any more shows to watch. But there’s always more. Always. It might have to be something you’ve never heard of, by anyone. Or a show with only a measly two seasons. But it’s worth it. Some good suggestions of this would be:
"The 100"
So far, there are two seasons on Netflix. This action show is set far in the future, where the world is (the protagonists think) uninhabited. They’ve been living in a very strict spaceship for generations.
"Dark Matter"
So far, just one season. This futuristic mystery/action show reminds me of "Firefly."
"The Carrie Diaries"
Two seasons. It’s the prequel to "Sex and the City." If you like romance that causes drama and the story of finding yourself, this is it.
"Fuller House"
So far, one season on Netflix. It’s kind of cheesy but nostalgic. If you liked "Full House," it’s almost exactly like that.
The one- or two-season series are a bit disappointing, but some of them are still making more seasons. Either way, they’re worth it.
Another option is the five-plus season shows. These ones will take time commitment, but they have gotten so many seasons for a reason.
"Supernatural"
11 seasons—after you get past the first few episodes, it’s awesome. "Supernatural" is about chosen brothers trying to find their way.
" Gilmore Girls"
Seven seasons all recently put on Netflix. This show is full of quick wit, family drama and a cute little town. Definitely worth it.
"Parks and Recreation"
Seven seasons. A show of friendships, humor, many quotable lines and miniature horses.
"The Vampire Diaries"
Seven seasons. This show is based on books and is about attractive vampires fighting over a human girl. Full of drama.
The five-plus shows are great. Once they end, though, you kind of feel like your life is over, so be warned.
So embrace that Netflix. There are so many options for shows. Watching Netflix will help you know what people are talking about in social situations and keep you busy. The price recently went up from $8.99 to $9.99, but it’s worth it.
