Over the last month or so, I’ve come to realize that summer is a relaxing yet weird time of year. You’re supposed to be taking a break from hard work, yet many of us take summer classes to get ahead on credits (or make some up if you’re behind in math like I am). Many of us also intern five days a week which consists of sitting at a desk from 9-5 doing anything from answering phone calls to organizing paperwork. Others are lifeguards, camp counselors, beach goers and many other things. I happen to have three jobs, yet I have the most inconsistent and weirdly available schedule out of everyone I know.
With a weekly schedule coming out at the beginning of the week and differing hours always, it’s hard to make plans, and even harder to avoid boredom at times. And with more weekend hours spent at work than on weekdays, it’s nearly impossible to take advantage of weekend getaways with family and friends. Since I have another month of this mayhem schedule to get through, I’ve decided to do some brainstorming on things to make the week go by in a faster and in more regular manner.
1. First, pick a few weekends to request off so you’ll be guaranteed to have some fun things to look forward to. This way you can gather with your friends to try and plan a weekend getaway or even a day trip to the beach. This way you’ll go back to work that Monday feeling refreshed after your mini vacation.
2. Take advantage of this awkwardly free time to exercise, something that anyone with a 9-5 job probably complains that they don’t have time for. Join a gym, go for a hike, walk your dog; anything to stay active and look your best before going back to school. This way you’ll get into a great workout routine and hopefully continue it when it comes time to go back to school.
3. Personally, my mom does not approve of me laying on the couch catching up on reality tv in between jobs. Clearly she would rather I clean my room or do something “productive,” whatever that means in the middle of July. But I guess if I get all of this “productive” stuff out of the way during my boring days, I can pop open a bottle of rose by the time 5 o’clock rolls around and enjoy my summer night spent right.
4. Yeah, you may be bored, however, just think about the fact that you have no homework, no tests and no stupid busy work (outside of your internship of course). The only thing you’re probably missing about school is your friends, so use these in between days to visit them. I’m sure you can find a few that have just as strange work schedules as you who are dying for a reunion.
