Ever wonder how you could get your professors to like you? Does it seem like you aren't exactly their "favorite" student? As a college sophomore, I feel inclined to provide you with a few tips on how you can instantly become a teacher's pet. Check them out below!
1. Respect your professors.
First and foremost, respect your professors. After all, how do you expect them to like you if you don't? You can express respect for your professors by greeting them when you arrive to class, smiling at them once in a while, or even by sending them a "get well soon" email if necessary. Doing so will show them that you respect and care about them, and who wouldn't like you for that?
2. Sit in the front row of every class.
I try to do this almost every year in every one of my classes. Even if all of the seats in the front row of the room are taken, try the next best seat. Sitting in the front row not only demonstrates leadership and bravery, but it also enables your professors to notice that you are actually a student present in their class. This can make a huge difference.
3. Participate at least once during each class.
Professors love seeing students ask questions, engage in class discussions, etc. Therefore, it is very important that you participate at least once during each class. You can either ask/answer a question or put forth your opinions during a class discussion. You might even earn participation points by sharing details about your day at the beginning of class! Although participating during class may be extremely difficult for you, doing so will definitely cause your professors to notice you.
4. Be dedicated to the class and stay dedicated to the class.
Professors love students who are dedicated to doing well in their class. These students usually attend a majority, if not all of the scheduled classes on time (unless during the case of an emergency), perform well on exams, homework assignments, etc., turn in and complete all assignments on time, and make an effort to participate during each class. However, it is important not to slack off in doing so, as this will show your professors that you are no longer determined to do well in their class. Also, if you know that you will not be able to attend a class, let your professors know in advance by contacting them using a method that they would prefer.
5. Maintain focus during class.
This tip is very relatable to tip one, in that it also involves respecting your professors. It is extremely important that you maintain focus while class is in session. This means refraining from using electronics and talking with friends during the class unless absolutely necessary. There is a time to have fun, but there is also a time to be studious. Act accordingly.
6. Visit with your professors during their office hours if necessary.
A professor's main purpose is to provide his/her students with knowledge. It is the student's responsibility to visit with his/her professors if they are confused about any of the content that is discussed throughout the duration of the course. Don't be afraid to do this! This is your opportunity to show your professors that you are determined to do well in their course, as well as to ask them questions about anything you are confused on. Your professors can even help you determine how you can improve your grade in their course, as well as help you formulate effective study strategies. Remember, your professors are there to help you succeed, so take advantage of them.
That concludes this collection of tips. Doesn't it feel good to be a teacher's pet?
