So, yesterday was Christmas. You opened up one of your presents and looked up with a fake smile and exclaimed how much you loved the awesome _______ (insert terrible gift here). Like the rest of 2016, Christmas was a total bust. Now, you’re stuck with something absolutely terrible and have no clue how you will salvage the last couple days of the year. Here are a few tips on how to discretely rid yourself of yet another thing that reminds you of what a roller coaster ride 2016 was...
EBay
If you sell your gift on EBay or another website, make sure to price it just right. Don’t be too greedy because chances are, other people won’t think your gift is too hot either! Also, talk it up really well in the caption section of the post. Make it sound like the best thing since sliced bread and mention how sad it is that you need to get rid of it to pay for your rent, car payment, etc.
Have a Terrible Gift Swap with friends
One way to try to salvage a bad gift is to make the best of it and do a gift swap with other people who are in the same boat as you. Have a small get together with food and friends makes getting a bad gift fun and it can get you laughing at the awful things others got and how that item is yours now.
Regift
One warning here: DON’T REGIFT TO THE PERSON WHO GAVE IT TO YOU THE FIRST TIME.
A local resale Facebook page
This can be an easy way to ditch your present fast to someone who actually finds it cool and useful. Make sure your gifter isn’t a part of the page first!
Donate the gift to Goodwill
Donating something means you won’t get any money for it or a substitute gift. However, the feeling of someone else finding their dream present or perfect gift for someone else can be a great feeling. Maybe your excuse for not using your gift yet could be saying you gave the present to someone who needed it more than you? Extra points for selflessness.
Exchange it at the store
If you exchange whatever you got at the store, it’s pretty much a win-win situation. You get rid of the thing you didn’t want and get something more your style. Usually stores are pretty understanding when it comes to gift-giving around the holidays so it is probably your best bet!
Of course there are always risks when getting rid of your gift in any of these ways. Waiting a couple weeks or months in case the person who gave you what they thought to be the best gift ever sees it online or in a thrift store for sale is your safest bet to come out gift- free in the new year. Also, you’ll have to come up with an airtight excuse as to why you haven’t worn the sweater yet or why you don’t smell like the beautiful perfume your 100-year-old grandmother spent weeks finding just for you. In the end, your best bet is to just suck it up and realize that it is the thought that counts, especially around the holidays.
