Summer is two weeks away for college students which means three months of being home with family and friends while taking a break from the stress of school work. With all the upcoming summer fun comes the realization that you need to start finding a steady summer job. Recently, I have been looking for a second side job so I can earn even more. This is what I have gathered since doing so.
1. Create or update your resume.
This is the first thing employers are going to ask for when you apply for a job. Building a resume is simple, easy, and effective way of showing employers what you accomplished and where you have worked in one document.
2. Decide what kind of summer job you want.
There are a variety of different summer jobs for college students. You can be a receptionist, sales associate, work outside, anything. Make sure the jobs you are considering are local and that seem interesting and fun to you.
3. Search for jobs online, in newspaper ads and in person.
Online job finders are extremely useful when it comes to job searching. Although newspapers are not as common anymore, they do have a section of job advertisements. Asking if a company is hiring for employment in person is always a good option, and maybe even the best way to do so.
4. Apply to your desired jobs.
You should apply to more than one job because it gives you a better chance of getting an interview. Some companies require you to apply online while others require you to apply in person. Make sure to follow up with the places you applied to a few days after to let them know that you are very interested!
5. Interview for jobs.
Job interviews can be intimidating so make sure you be yourself and professional throughout this step. Make sure you know some things about the company, be prepared to answer on the spot questions, and dress appropriately. Most importantly, be confident.
The search for summer employment may not be ideal when finals exams and presentations are in a week, but it is never too early to start. If you follow these five steps, you'll be on track to earning extra cash for the upcoming school year.
