Once Halloween is over, everybody skips straight to Christmas.
Stop.
We still have Thanksgiving.
Everyone is quick to throw out "How do you even celebrate Thanksgiving other than just eating?"
It's not hard to celebrate up until the fourth Thursday in November. I'm not even talking about celebrating the Pilgrims and Native Americans. Instead of skipping over Thanksgiving when the clock strikes midnight on October 31st, why don't we try something new?
Why don't we try being more grateful and generous.
There is so much negativity in this world. It consumes every aspect of life and sometimes we find ourselves drowning in pools of it. When people constantly radiate negative energy, it's easy for us to fall in the same practice. So instead of skipping straight to caroling and Christmas Cookies, why don't we spend some time really appreciating the small things in life?
Sit down and watch a movie with your family. Go on a hike and spend some time admiring the beauty of nature. Hold the door for a stranger and feel good for being kind even if you don't get a thank you. Pay for the meal behind you in the drive-thru. Do something to make someone else's day. It pays to be kind. Not only will you feel better about yourself for being kind, but you could turn someone's bad day around.
So please, instead of wanting to skip right to Elf and Mariah Carey, think about taking on a new tradition of being kind up until the big turkey dinner. As soon as you finish that last bite, feel free to celebrate all you want. But until then, choose to be kind. It pays off. The world will be a little bit better if you do.
