If you ever get sick of eating burgers and french fries, Burger King, and McDonald's, there are some foreign foods that are lesser known in America that you can buy at your local grocery store, order online, find at your nearest foreign restaurant or even prepare yourself. Check some of these out. Trust me, it's so worth it.
1. Stroopwafels
Originating in the Netherlands, these delicious, waffle-like snacks are sure to satisfy your sweet tooth. Stroopwafels are two thin waffles pressed together with caramel in the middle. Set one on top of the rim of your hot tea for a few minutes for some gooey deliciousness. These Dutch delights are available at Walmart, Amazon, and Tesco.
2. Gelato
Gelato is an Italian form of ice cream. It uses more milk instead of cream and is churned at a slower speed for a smoother taste. Walmart has varying brands, and Target and Walgreens have some as well.
3. Currywurst
Currywurst comes from Germany. It is made with bratwurst, curry powder, and a few other ingredients that put together, are an enticing treat that has varying degrees of spiciness. You can buy bratwurst and the rest of the ingredients at pretty much any grocery store. Any German restaurant you go to in the States will probably have it, and it is worth the try.
4. Macaroons
Paris is known for its outstanding, delectable macaroons that come in hundred of flavors. They have a crisp, crumbly outer shell with a dense, chewy center. These French candies can be found at Walmart, Target, and various bakeries. It's a difficult recipe, but if you're a good cook, you could try your hand at making them yourself.
5. Kinder chocolate
"Kinder" ("children" in German) eggs are illegal in the United States because the toys inside are a choking hazard, but the chocolate bars (without a toy) can be ordered from Amazon and worldmarket.com and even Etsy. The outside is a smooth milk chocolate, and inside is a creamy, milky, melt-in-your-mouth goodness.
6. Crepes
You can try this French version of a pancake at various American restaurants, or you can make it yourself by googling a simple recipe. You can eat them with strawberries, Nutella, powdered sugar, whipped cream, or any number of things.
7. Belgian waffles
These waffles have larger indentations than what Americans are used to, and they hold larger pools of syrup. They're so sugary you can eat them with not just syrup, but strawberries and powdered sugar as well. They're lighter and crispier. You can order these online from most stores or buy a waffle iron with a deeper, larger grid and make them yourself.
8. Kielbasa
This traditional Polish dish is a sausage that comes in a lot of different varieties. It can be eaten alone, in soups, or even with sauerkraut of cabbage if you're into that. You can find this meat at Walmart, Target, and other supermarkets.
9. Churros
They are a sweet Spanish snack, but they are popular in France, the Philippines, Portugal, and even some places in the United States, too. Churros are a fried dough pastry best served with chocolate sauce, Nutella, and ice cream, and you can also stuff them with cream cheese and make them as pancakes or popcorn. They can be found at Walmart and Target.
10. Sangria
Even if you don't like wine, you should still try this Spanish drink. It's incredibly easy to make: just cut up a bunch of fruit, put it in a pitcher, and stir in a bottle of wine. It's that simple. Strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, grapes, apples, kiwi, and oranges are all common fruits that are used to make sangria. Just look up a recipe, and you'll find something that utilizes your favorites fruits and wines.
11. Wontons
A wonton is a type of Chinese dumpling with meat in the middle. They can be eaten alone or in soup. You'll be able to find them at Kroger and Walmart and, of course, your nearest Chinese restaurant.
12. Pastel de Belem
A Portuguese custard pastry, best served warm, is a food native to Lisbon that anyone will love. You can sprinkle them with cinnamon and sugar for a yummy and quite filling dessert. Or you can eat them for breakfast, lunch and dinner if you become as addicted as some people.
You can find any of these foods relatively easily in the USA, and others you can make yourself experience other countries and cultures through your taste buds in your own kitchen. However, most of the foods you'll be able to get in the States are prepackaged or not actually legitimate, so it's worth making a trip across the world to try the authentic recipes. If you ever visit any of these places, you have to try these foods because nothing can beat the real deal.
