We all have resolutions for the new year. Some people want straight A's or to stop watching so much Netflix. According to most studies, the most popular resolution is to get in shape. While this might be the most popular resolution, not a lot of people keep up this resolution. We get busy after winter break, classes start, you have work and you just don't have time anymore to workout. So follow these five tips and you'll start your year off with a bang.
Step 1: Start eating healthy and drinking water
While Chick Fil A once a day might be filling and make you feel happy inside. Unhealthy food makes you want to be inside and not productive, especially when it comes to working out. Now I'm not saying you need to completely cut fast food out of your diet but instead of a normal sandwich and soda, a grilled chicken sandwich and a water would give you the energy and protein you need for your day. Changing the little things in your daily diet can give you the energy to go run that mile or do those squats.
We are supposed to drink half a gallon of water a day, so eight cups. While that sounds scary, drinking eight glasses of water is pretty simple. Just get a plastic water cup and just casually refill it during the day. Drinking water plain doesn't sound like fun, but added different fruits to your water such as lemons or strawberries. The natural sugar from the fruits will help make you happy that your being healthy and that will make you want to do some sort of workout.
Step 2: A half hour of workout a day
It's college so after our three classes, work and paper writing you're just to tired to get up from the couch to go to the gym. You don't have to be in a crowded gym in order to workout, there's many apps out there that you can do a five minute ab workout or a good butt lift. An app called SWORKIT allows you to chose what you want to work out and the amount of time. You can do this anywhere, even while watching Gossip Girl.
Step 3. Break up your goal
Resolving to do a seven-minute mile is pretty intimidating. But starting at a ten minute mile and working you're way to a seven minute mile is easier. Your body will build up endurance over time and that endurance will help you decrease the mile time. A goal that’s either far in the future or far out of your comfort zone can be tough to start, so break the resolution down into achievable steps.
Step 4. Workout with friends
Coming from someone who sometimes works out by herself, it can get pretty boring. Having a friend that will go to the gym or a yoga class with you once or twice a week will making the gym less dreadful. You have someone to talk to or to stare down hot frat guys with. Also having a friend there can give you the motivation to do that extra set or hold that warrior pose for ten seconds longer.
Step 5. Have a positive attitude
If you go into any resolution with a bad attitude, chances are you will not succeed in your goal. Any resolution will have its ups and downs but it is how you face those challenges that will show what will happen. If you want good grades this semester, tell yourself that you will get all A's. If you want to work out twice a week for over an hour, tell yourself that you can do it. If you believe that you can do it, then you will.
