How The Evans Scholarship Changed My Life
Michigan State Evans Scholars

Every fall, as school begins to roll around, I begin to get stressed about making sure my classes are officially chosen and that I don't forget anything while I'm packing. While getting ready for school, I get myself in the mindset for success. I remind myself of the reasons I need to work hard and be successful in school. As I'm reminding myself of my goals, I remember the reason that it is even possible for me to achieve these goals. It's because of a man named Chick Evans.

Chick Evans created the Evans Scholars Program in order to provide hard-working caddies with financial need, an excellent character, and strong caddie record with a full-ride to the college of their choice. The first two Evans Scholars were selected in 1930, and they both attended Northwestern University. Today, there are more than 10,400 Evans Scholar Alumni. Each of these bright young individuals has worked hard to accomplish what they have so far. I am proud and thankful for my Evans Scholar brothers and sisters nation-wide who have worked hard and deserve their accomplishments in life.

The Evans Scholarship is a true blessing and honor. There are so many things I have to be grateful for, simply because of the opportunities I was given by having the Evans Scholarship. For starters, I have met and continue to meet some of the most amazing and inspiring young individuals through the program. Whether it's my fellow housemates, incoming New Scholars, or scholars from other houses during outings, I have been able to connect and interact with some of the most motivated, intelligent, and fun-loving people!

Not only have I connected with tons of current scholars, but I have also formed strong relationships with Evans Scholar alumni and Directors for the Western Golf Association. These are the most inspiring and dedicated individuals I've ever met, and I can't thank any of them enough for their continuous support of the Evans Scholarship Program.

The Evans Scholarship has also granted me with the chance to attend Michigan State University and study Hospitality Business, which is something I would not have a chance of doing otherwise. If I didn't get the Evans Scholarship, I would have never found my true passion for making other people happy and providing excellent hospitality services. I'm thankful I worked hard all of the years following up to applying for the scholarship, and I am honored each and every day to be an Evans Scholar. Thanks to Chick Evans, I have been able to excel in school and work life, in addition to making incredible friendships.

It is a true honor and a privilege to represent Chick Evans through work, school, and character. If given the chance, I highly recommend caddying at a country club, developing your work ethic at a young age, and applying for the Chick Evans Caddie Scholarship. Not only will you advance in your academic and work careers, but you will meet your best friends for life and develop amazing connections with alumni, members from your club, and the incredible staff at the Western Golf Association. As always, keep Chick's dream alive.

Taylor Swift in orange dress playing a moss-covered piano on stage with bright lights.

A three-and-a-half-hour runtime. Nine Eras. Eleven outfit changes. Three surprise songs. Zero breaks. One unforgettable evening. In the past century, no other performer has put on an electric performance quite like Taylor Swift, surpassing her fans ‘wildest dreams’. It is the reason supporters keep coming back to her shows each year. Days later, I’m still in awe of the spectacle ‘Miss Americana’ puts on every few days in a new city. And, like one of Taylor’s exes, has me smiling as I reminisce about the memories of the night we spent together.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.
