Before coming to Florida State, I was undoubtedly convinced that earning a bachelors degree, attending law school, and becoming a prestigious lawyer was my destiny. When friends and family would question my common ambition, the explanation was usually surface leveled and broad. Without having any legitimate knowledge about the field, I was stubborn and determined. Immediately, I began college as a political science major. The first poli-sci class I took pertaining to the major was introduction to international relations. Long story short, I was going through hell and back several times a week. Although the some of the material was interesting, I rarely found myself sincerely engaging in the course. I would constantly complain about memorizing hundreds of terms and dates that I found meaningless. This story isn't to condescend the value of the course or the major, but to explain the subjectiveness of the situation. After a semester of suffering in order to pass the class, it was time to reconsider my so called "fate."
After a summer of contemplations, I decided to switch into the English major. I've always recognized my passion for reading and writing, but never thought about pursuing it. My hesitance rooted from the common assumptions that correspond with completing an english degree. Would I be able to find a job? Would I ever be financially comfortable? What if the field is just way too competitive?
Despite the fears and preconceived ideas, I decided to give it a chance. After a semester packed with english classes, everything changed. I'd find myself engaging in the course work, looking forward to class, and researching new ways to expand my knowledge regarding rhetoric and composition. Instead of dreading tests, assignments, and papers, I felt determined and excited to get them done. The best part was feeling accomplished and satisfied with my own work.
Although I'm still anxious about what the future holds, I can confidently say that I'm on the right path. If you feel like your major is dragging you down instead of pushing you forward, maybe it's time to make some reconsiderations.
