The Power of Twitter

How Social Media Changed My Life
Connor McPhee

Social Media is a wonderful thing. It connects us to millions of people via the internet from just a small screen in our pockets. Everyone has their own username, ideas, and beliefs. Many people use social media differently, myself included. People on social media use their account for things from advertisements, ranting about sports, to even attempting to 'Hook up' with random strangers. My experience with Social Media has more of a purpose than one night stands or promotions. It has truly changed my life.

Football

I played football all through high school and am currently playing football at the Division II level. Social media allowed me to achieve this. My dad and I had a lot of trouble trying to find schools to recruit me, so I took it upon myself. I used Hudl to create a highlight tape of my best plays and emailed it to coaches all across the country. I even "friend-ed" coaches on Facebook to try and get their attention. This allowed me to reach a global market of coaches that wanted players like me, and it made being recruited so much easier.

Twitter specifically helped me in many ways. On twitter I was able to follow coaches and have them see my highlight tape by looking at my bio. Twitter is where I met my future coaches at Augustana.

If it weren't for Social Media and the ability to spread my highlight tape all across the country, I may not have had the opportunity to go to a great college such as Augie and play at a high level. I would have never met the people whom I now call my coaches and friends. Social Media changed my life and gave me the opportunity to follow my dream of playing football, and go to a top notch university at the same time.

Love

Everyone who has social media has heard of the phrase 'Sliding into the DM's'. Many of my friends in high school and college have attempted to do this to girls, some being more successful than others. I am currently in a loving and incredible relationships with a girl whom I met online.

Before meeting her online, I had never seen or even heard of her in person. On Twitter, she had one day followed me, and I had followed her back since I noticed she went to the rival high school in the same town as mine. By simply looking at her page I could learn a lot about her. Later that year I did the very thing many of my other friends we're trying to do. I slid into her DMs. Its worked.

If it weren't for Twitter allowing us to make this initial connection and conversation, then I probably never would have met her. But thank goodness that Social Media helped me make this connection as later this month will be our one and a half year anniversary. Twitter brought me Love.

Who knows what can happen in just one post.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
