That time of year where it sucks to be single is just around the corner: Valentine's Day. A holiday where consumerism is at an all time high and self esteem is at an all time low. A holiday where for us single ladies (now put your hands up), all we want to do is curl up in bed with a bottle of wine and a whole box of chocolate, watch sappy romantic movies and cry about how Ryan Gosling will never write us a letter a day for a whole year. However, I think it is about time us ladies sucked it up and realize that we are so much better than this materialistic and honestly superficial holiday.
Let's get one thing straight, first. Valentine's Day is a day about love, not relationships. So if you do find yourself without a "bae" or significant other this Valentine's Day, show the people you love how much you really love them. You could send your mother flowers or send the cheesiest Valentine's Day card you can find to your best friend. A lot of us confuse love with relationships, but love is all around us.
One thing I always get so tired of hearing on Valentine's Day is how single people complain that they are "forever alone." You are not forever alone, you are surrounded by friends and family that truly love you and care about you every day of the year. It may not be the kind of intimate "love" you were hoping to be showered with on Valentine's Day, but celebrate the amazing amount of love you are so incredibly lucky to have in your life. Although you may not have a romantic partner at the moment, you will find that one person in your life that you are meant to be with.
You do not need a boyfriend to be happy. But even if you are feeling the single blues extra hard, it is totally okay to indulge in the stereotypes of a single girl on Valentine's Day. But instead of letting it get you down, grab some of your other single friends and make a night out of it to bring you up. Dress up and go out to a fancy, romantic restaurant together or stay in and have a movie marathon! Make cute Valentine's Day themed crafts for each other or go out and buy all of the chocolate on last-minute sale. Have fun with the people that love you rather than sulk and let the single blues get the best of you.
Whether you are getting over a bad heartbreak or have been riding solo for quite a while now, whether you want to celebrate Valentine's Day and embrace the stereotypes or whether you choose to ignore the customs of the holiday all together, being single on Valentine's Day is nothing to get upset over and should be the least of your worries.
