This summer, I have an internship at an amazing company called Opportunity International. And let me tell you, Opportunity is changing the world.
It is a micro-finance nonprofit that runs for-profit banks in developing countries that stimulate the economy and brings communities out of poverty, leading to more education, less hunger, and more human rights.
To give you a run down, here's what happens:
A person living in a developing country applies for a loan to start a business. This gives that person a job and stable income. This loan is very small compared to American loans and is paid back over time with minimal interest to the bank in that country. Opportunity owns the bank and only employs nationals, or people who live in that country. This creates more and more jobs while also making viable businesses.
Now, once the person receives a loan, they are also given a savings account where they receive interest on the money they save, just as you do with your savings account.
Finally, they join a Trust Group. This Trust Group is a group of entrepreneurs just like them, who hold each other accountable for paying their loan. So, if one person cannot pay back at that moment, another person from their Trust Group will cover for them. Also in their Trust Group, they learn business and entrepreneurial skills, as well as how to successfully save money. Before even receiving a loan, the person has to go through training as to how to use it.
It's extremely thorough and well thought out.
But wait, there's more.
Opportunity has life insurance, crop insurance, loans for school fees, loans to build schools, housing loans, and more, all of which are ending global poverty, which in turn can end global hunger.
How cool is that?
Ninety-four percent of Opportunity's clients are women. This empowers them, makes them become leaders in their community, and saves their children.
We are in 28 developing countries and have 12 million clients. That's 12 million people who have lifted themselves out of poverty.
Opportunity gives a hand up instead of a hand out. We don't just provide a temporary fix—we give a permanent solution for that family and the generations to come.
Not only is it an amazing company, it's filled with amazing people who are all striving to make this world better. And trust me, they are.
I am so blessed to be a part of this beautiful goal: to end global poverty.
Here's the best part: you can be a part of it, too.
