I have two sisters, one older and one younger. My older sister, Elizabeth, is an art major. She’s always been the creative, artistic, slightly rebellious, right-brained goofball of the family. So I wasn’t surprised when she decided to study art in college. She has always been really passionate about photography and even got accepted into SCAD to study it. However, SCAD’s orientation slightly freaked her (and the rest of our family) out, so she decided to stay closer to home and go to Augusta University to pursue her photography degree.
Basically, little high school, math-y, OCD, right-brained me thought this was just going to be a waste of time and money. I mean anyone can set up a tripod and click some buttons, right? I thought that she needed to get a “real” degree so she could be well off and actually make money. Well, my perspective on all this changed as soon as I started looking at her artwork.
To be a photography major, my sister has to major in general art and choose photography as her concentration. (She also decided to pursue printmaking later, which is super cool). So, Elizabeth has to take a plethora of art classes ranging from art history to printmaking (which I refer to as “ink class”) to drawing to painting to photography to ceramics and probably a lot of more weird art classes that I would totally suck at. Through these classes, she has worked on too many projects to count which usually end up around our house because they’re actually super awesome. However, as of recent, she got a fancy art award and some of her art is being displayed in an art gallery! #SuperProudSister
I used to be so unappreciative of art, but as soon as my sister started creating things, I really, really, really like looking at art now. Sometimes I don’t even understand what I’m looking at, but having a crazy art major of a sister has definitely broadened my horizons. I’m not really sure how to explain my newfound appreciation for art, so I’m just going to share some of my sister’s art with you guys. She also has no idea I'm sharing these pieces, so she's either going to be really touched or really angry. So please enjoy my mediocre explanations to describe and brag about my sister's beautiful art that so deserves to be shared.
This is a photo my sister took. Apparently those are the tops of lipsticks and they look like melting popsicles. I don't know why I like this photo so much because I actually despise the color pink, but something about it makes me happy.
On the left is a ceramics piece she made. The actual size of the "pot" is about 2 feet tall. She's always been really obsessed with the sea, so she makes a lot of oceanic themed pieces (including a 7 foot mermaid tail that is still sitting in our basement). On the right are some prints my sister made. She calls this collection of prints "Struttura & Strati". These prints just won that fancy art award I mentioned before!
This is a photo she took and I don't understand it at all, but I think it's still super cool.
Speechless.
Yet another photo I may never understand, but I think it's so cool how she used her glasses.
This is another print she made and to be honest it totally freaks me out. But I've discovered that's the cool thing about art, it can make you feel different emotions and start some really cool conversations.
She really does have quite an ocean theme going on with a lot of her pieces. I love love love this photo because the blues and the greens are so pretty!
This lightbulb piece is my absolute favorite thing my sister has ever made. She really doesn't like it, but I have a thing for the color blue and attractive sine and cosine waves.
This is just her doodling and I still think it's really, really cool. I think she was going through a Picasso phase when she did these.
There are so many things I love about this photo: the unfocused gate, the very straight path, the greenery, and of course that gorgeous dog. This photo makes me feel adventurous and mysterious at the same time and I love this feeling!
She calls this piece, "A Collection of Torture Devices". If you've ever studied classical ballet, you understand how fitting that title is.
Also, she's done a ton of weddings and the photos always turn out gorgeous. I really love how bright the flowers look in this photo.
So, that's just a touch of my sister's work. I know this article may have come off as me showing off my sister, but I don't know any other way to express how truly proud and appreciative I am that she chose to follow her passion and has changed my perspective on art through her endeavors.
She has even inspired me to create my own art, as seen here:
On second thought, I think I'll stick with math and leave the art to Elizabeth. (Also, please don't have nightmares about my stick figure.)
