How My Dog Is Raising Me

The reality is that having a dog does teach us a few tricks.

How My Dog Is Raising Me

All my life I've heard getting a dog is a huge responsibility, dogs are expensive, or you don't have time for a dog. None of these things could fight the feelings of overflowing joy I felt every time I'd see a dog walk by, and especially when I'd play with one. All I wanted was a puppy to love and raise, despite what my daddy thought was best.

I finally broke down and got a puppy anyway. A Goldendoodle named Charlie, and it turns out everyone was right. It's a lot of work, money, and time. However, I wouldn't change a thing. I just wanted to raise my own puppy, but in reality he's raising me.

My puppy has taught me time management. You can't follow a schedule? A dog will change that: breakfast 8 a.m., potty break 8:30 a.m., outside playtime 9-9:30 a.m. etc.

My puppy has taught me how to save money. Coupons on puppy chow and treats? Cut them out! We love sales and perks cards! I'm less likely to just go buy a pair of shoes I don't need when I'm thinking about Charlie. (A lot of the money I save does buy him toys, but that's not the point.)

My puppy has taught me to not forget to play. When a puppy brings you a ball you throw it. He always seems to know when I've had a stressful day or just need to have a good laugh.

My puppy has taught me that exercise is necessary and plenty of sleep also. So. Much. Cardio. But, my running partner is pretty cute and an awesome motivator. What is even cuter than him running? Him taking naps.

My puppy has taught me to put someone else before myself. Having someone be dependent on you is a lot of work. Shout out to all the parents out there! All my decisions include him. I can't just pick up and go somewhere. I have to make plans.

My puppy has taught me unconditional love. Yes I get frustrated when he has an accident after being good for a week or chews up one of my shoe strings, but I still love him. Those big brown eyes giving me that I'm sorry look get me every time. He is mine and no matter what he does he's still gonna have my heart!

So yea, a dog is a lot of work. They'll take your time, your money, and your heart. However, I couldn't imagine life without my little man now. I strive every day to raise Charlie, but truly he is raising me.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
