From One Nervous College Freshman To Another

How moving into college turned out to be everything I dreamed it would be.

College is a scary thought for some people, most of us are ready to leave our parents houses but we aren’t really ready to be on our own yet. The summer flew by and here we are moving into college for the first time, where you probably don’t have your best friend or family right next to you at all times anymore. You have to do things for yourself, like buy groceries, and pay bills, and email your own professors (because having your parents email your professors is highly frowned upon) and we can’t forget ordering textbooks. Oh the hundreds of dollars we’ll spend buying books for classes we don’t even want to take. But that’s all a part of the college experience, even though it’s a little nerve-wracking, it’s all a part of a great plan.

Now moving in seems very overwhelming and it is. I’m a college freshman, but I had the privilege to move in a few days early because of some obligations I’ll have at school. Moving in was a great experience but in all honesty it was a little overwhelming and hectic. My mom and dad and grandparents helped me move in and get everything set up. Which was great, my mom and nana made sure I did everything and had everything I needed. But on my part, the emotions were overwhelming and the motions of the day were overwhelming too. You never expect this day to actually come where your family is leaving you at an unfamiliar campus with all these people you don’t know. It can be a little terrifying at first but after the first couple of days you’ll get the hang of it.

Let’s talk people now, one of the scariest parts of college for me was not knowing anyone. I was here early so my roommate wasn’t here and I didn’t know anyone here yet, which was scary in itself and I was tempted to sit in my room and watch "Grey's Anatomy" until I had to leave. But I told myself I'd put myself out there to make new friends, so I did. The first night I was sitting with another freshman girl on a swing outside and some returning students came up to us and talked to us for a little while. For me that was a little awkward because I didn’t know them but after we talked a little bit they invited us to their room and told us about the college experience and now we have a couple new friends here on campus. My second night I was hanging out with another girl and we met some other freshmen and we played pool and ping pong and talked for a couple hours which was really nice.

College is all about putting yourself out there, no one knows who you are, No one knows your story unless you tell them, so make a name for yourself, make new friends, and make amazing memories because the college experience only comes once.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
