“Millennial” is the name given to people born in the late 1980s and the entirety of the 1990s. So anyone from the ages as low as 17, up to 27 is technically considered a millennial. Being one myself I can sometimes forget that what I do has ramifications that could affect American history.
The truth is that this generation has the most potential to create change than any generation of the past; we just need to pry ourselves away from senseless technology in order to see it. Change isn’t easy but as a collective unit we the youth could be the catalyst.
These are the things we must do as a generation in order to see the change we so desperately need:
1. Vote
This year’s upcoming presidential election is very important for several different reasons. Voting to the youth is seen as something of little importance. I am here to tell you that voting is very important. Not only should you vote because it is your civic duty, but also because of how many lives were lost in order for you to be able to vote.
2. Learn
Regardless of your personal feelings about school, it is essential to at least acquire a high school diploma. There are jobs and opportunities out there but only for those who are qualified and capable. Knowledge is a tool that can be used to change the world. Sometimes a strong mind is more effective than a strong fist.
3. Stand Up
Every significant movement for revolution consisted of people that were committed to achieving a single goal. Those involved were willing to sacrifice their lives if it meant they could defeat injustice. Today we have individuals that are fighting for modulation but they need the support of everyone else. Instead of tweeting or writing a status online, find out what you can actively do to change the current circumstances in America. Leaders are only as strong as the people that follow them.
We have read history books that teach us about change throughout history, but today we seem to fail to realize that we could provide the change we so desperately need.
We have the intellect and tools necessary, now all we need is the courage and motivation to forge ahead. Change is bound to happen eventually, but there is no better time than the present.
