Everybody knows it: looking for a job actually IS a job. Maybe that job is even more tiring than the job you're applying for is. Who knows. There is one thing, however, we all agree on: writing job applications is work. So here are a few tips what to keep in mind while looking for an employment and how to get that job fast!
1. You actually need to do something
You won't believe it, but you actually need to work for it. The jobs won't come looking for you - it's you hunting down the jobs. So roll up your shirtsleeves, sit down and get ready.
2. You have to be patient – veeeeery patient
Don't apply for just one job. Apply for several options in order to increase the possibility to get hired fast. This means research, write, send, repeat.
3. Get used to getting rejected
Yeah, I'm sorry to tell you, but that's reality. Don't break down, don't cry. Most job seekers are rejected by over 15 employers before landing a job. What you need to do is what you like to do most: research, write, send, repeat. Sounds familiar? Don't stop applying!
4. Be creative - even if you're not
Exactly. You've been fighting with all those cover letters and now they tell you to be creative and impressive and interesting and whatever. But let's be honest. A good introduction definitely increases your chances to get hired fast.
5. Try to remember whatever you did in life
That's easier said than done. I remember exactly that fantastic burger I had for dinner and that vacation last summer. But remind me, what am I studying again? How many times did I switch my major? Your edited and up-to-date resume, however, is essential for any job application.
6. Dress up
First appearances always matter. Dress like a successful person in your profession in order to make a good first impression during an interview. Take a shower, change those sweatpants into a nice suit and don't forget proper shoes.
7. Do NOT be yourself – at least not 100%
Sure, fake smiles and rehearsed answers are a bad idea, but so is too much honesty. Don't tell your employers about the last Netflix series you watched or how many times you had mac and cheese this week. Be authentic but don't forget that there are some things you should probably keep for yourself.
On your marks, get set, go! Get that blank word document filled, search the Internet for those exciting job positions and get you out there. Now it's all about you and how you deal with it. Or you can just simply open up a new bucket of ice cream and binge watch that series you were thinking about all day…. Your call.
